INTRODUCTION
Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) are exclusive rail routes
designed to efficiently transport goods and freight,
separating them from passenger traffic.
- Increasing freight capacity and speed
- Reducing congestion and transit times
- Enhancing safety and reliability
- Boosting economic growth and trade
- Supporting sustainable development
BENEFITS :
1.Economic growth and Efficiency.
2.Industrial Development and Regional Revitalisation.
3.Relieving Pressure on Existing Rail Lines.
4.Environmental sustainability.
5.Socio-Economic Impact.
ROUTES
1.Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC):
Ludhiana to Dankuni (1,337 kilometers), passing
through the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh,
Jharkhand, and Bihar.
2.Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC):
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) to Dadri (1,506
kilometers), passing through the states of Maharashtra,
Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
The rail tracks linking the four largest metropolitan cities of
Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, and the two diagonals
of North-South Dedicated Freight Corridor (Delhi-Chennai)
and East-West Dedicated Freight Corridor (Kolkata-Mumbai)
are called the Golden Quadrilateral (GQFC).
F E AT U R E S
1.Faster Speed
2.Efficient Freight Transport.
3.Reducing congestion .
4.Reducing carbon Emission.
5.Electric Locomotives.
6.Specialized Tracks.
7. Separation of Freight and Passenger.
I M PA C T
1.Boosts Economic growth.
2.Enhances Trade and Commerce.
3.Supports Industrial Development.
4.Creates Employment Opportunities
CURRENT
CHALLENGE
S - Congested routes
- Long transit times
- Limited capacity
- Safety concerns
- Inefficient
operations
DFC ADVANTAGES
1.Separation of Freight and Passenger traffic.
2.Increase Average Speed(80-100km/hr).
3.Improved Loading Capacity(1000-1500 tonnes)
4.Enhanced Safety features(automatic braking, collision avoidance).
5.Modern terminals with advanced handling equipment.
IMPLEMENTATION STATUS
As of April 2024, Eastern Freight Corridor is fully
operational whereas Western Freight Corridor has
85% operational status. Overall 90% of the network
is operational. 300 trains run on the lines every day.
The operational rate shall reach 95% by April-end.
[8]
The Detailed Project Review (DPR) of North-South
and East-Coast Freight Corridor are being prepared
has been submitted whereas the DPR for East-West
DFC will be submitted by April-end (2024).
ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
ECONOMIC BENEFITS
1.Increased GDP growth .
2.Job Creation(direct and
indirect).
3.Increased Trade and
Commerce.
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
4.Reduced Transportation costs.
1.Reduced Carbon Emission(estimated 10%
decrease ).
2.Lower noise pollution.
3.Minimised land acquisition .
TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS AND FUTURE
PLANS
-Advanced signalling and systems.
-Automated train protection.
-High Speed communication networks.
-Exapansion to new routes( e.g East - west and north-south
corridors).
-Integration with other transportation modes(ports,airports).
-Upgradation of existing infrastructure.
Conclusio
n
Dedicated Freight Corridors are a game-changer for
India's transportation landscape
Transforming the way goods are moved, boosting
economic growth, and enhancing sustainability
