2. Introduce the Phases, methods and processes of sewage treatment and
disposal
INTRODUCTION TO SEWAGE TREATMENT

Sewage Treatment
Sewage treatment covers all processes to which sewage is subjected in order to
remove or alter its objectionable constituents so as to render it inoffensive to
environment and health.

The primary purposes of sewage treatment are:

(1) To remove undesirable, settleable and floating substances.
(2) To break down the organic components of sewage into stable forms without
endangering public health,
(3) To eliminate disease producing microorganisms (Pathogens)
(4) Treatment and safe disposal of sludge and sewage effluents ,
(5) Tertiary treatment of sewage effluent for reuse of water
(6) To prevent damages to water bodies, soil or other components of the
environment.
INTRODUCTION TO SEWAGE TREATMENT

Phases/ Unit Operations of Sewage Treatment

(1) Preparatory Treatment: To remove coarse suspended matters, floating

matters, oils and grease.
(2) Primary Treatment: To remove settleable and suspended solids by
sedimentation
(3) Secondary Treatment: To stabilize organic matters through biological
processes and reduction of pathogens
(4) Safe Disposal of sewage effluent
(5) Tertiary Treatment of Effluent
(6) Treatment and disposal of sludge.
