INTRODUCTION TO SIWES
 The student industrial training is the training
program which forms part of the academic standard
in the various degree programs for all Nigerian
tertiary institutions.
 It seeks to bridge the gap existing between
technology and other professional education
programs in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
INTRODUCTION SIWES
 To provide an avenue for student in the university to
acquire industrial skills
 To prepare student for the work situation they are
likely to meet after the graduation.
 To expose students to work methods and techniques
in handling equipment and machinery that may not
be available in the university or institute.
CARDIOLOGY DEPARTMENT
(ECG UNIT)
 Cardiology department is a medical specialty that
focuses on cardiovascular abnormalities.
 ECG Units measures the electrical activities of the
heart to help diagnose a cardiovascular
abnormalities.
 Diagnosis such as: irregular heart beat, chest pain,
heart attacks and more cardiovascular diseases,
using Electrocardiograph.
ELECTROCARDIOGRAPH
 Is a machine that is used to evaluate the
cardiovascular abnormalities, using electrodes
(small plastic patches that stick to the skin)
ELECTROCARDIOGRAM(ECG)
 Is the procedure used to evaluate the electrical
signals in cardiovascular system, to diagnose certain
heart condition including abnormal heart rhythm
and coronary heart diseases.
PROCEDURE OF ECG
 ensure that the machine is fully charged or at least
charged enough for use
 Ensure that the ECG paper is in the machine and
there is enough for use
 Prepare the room for activities such as preparation
of the bed
 Ensure that the ECG gel and tissues are available
 The patient must lie down in a supine position
PROCEDURE CONT…
The electrodes are placed in the following after applying ECG
Gel.
 AVR: the right arm
 AVL: the left arm
 AVF: the left foot
 V1: over 4TH intercostal space.
 V2: over 4TH intercostal space
 V3: in between V2 and V4
 V4: over left 5TH intercostal space
 V5: over left 5TH intercostal space
 V6: over left 5TH intercostal space
PROCEDURE CONT…….
 Ensure that the patient is well relaxed then start the
ECG machine
 Remove the electrodes from the patient after the
results comes out
 Help the patient clean the gel from his/her body
 Ensure you write the name, sex, and age of the
patient and the date.
GOALS AND OUTCOME OF ECG
Goals
 Improved diagnosis
 Enhanced patient care
 Education and training
 Research and development
Outcomes:
 Accurate ECG interpretation.
 2. Improved cardiac disease diagnosis.
 3. Increase patient engagement.
 4. Education and training materials.
 5. Technical skills gained though handling ECG equipment and
software:
PATIENT-RELATED CHALLENGES
 Patient anxiety or stress
 Patient cooperation
 Underlying medical conditions
 Personal challenges:
 Time management: managing time effectively to
complete ECG
 Recordings, analyze results, and document findings.
 Non-reassignment of SIWES unit.
 Busy days.
RECOMMENDATIONS
 Establish a reassignment policy: develop a clear
policy outlining the procedures for reassigning
students to new units, by implementing this
recommendation, the SIWES program can be
improved to better meet of the students.
CONCLUSION
 My SIWES experience has been invaluable in
bringing the gap between academic knowledge and
practical industry application. Throughout my
placement, I had the opportunity to apply theoretical
concepts learned in the classroom to real-world
scenarios, enhancing my understanding.
