Understanding Remedial
Education Program
Remedial Education Program
• A program designed to help learners who are enrolled in school but are struggling to meet
the expected learning outcomes. It focuses on strengthening foundational skills in
subjects like reading and math.
• Example: Extra classes after school for students who are falling behind in Grade 3 reading
Catch-Up Program
A short-term program for students who missed school for a short period (e.g., due to illness,
conflict, or crisis) and need to quickly cover missed content to rejoin their age-appropriate
grade level.
• Example: A 3-month course for students to catch up after school closures due to a disaster.
Accelerated Education Program (AEP)
A flexible, age-appropriate program for out-of-school children and youth who have
missed several years of education, enabling them to complete a condensed version of the
formal curriculum and transition into formal school or other pathways.
• Example: A 2-year program covering 6 years of primary school for overage learners aged 10–
14.

Remedial Education Strategies
• Assessment to identify learners who are struggling:
Teachers needs to be able to use assessment and
analyze assessment results to be able to know
area/ level of support for every learner
• Ability grouping: Group learners according to
their level.
• Use approaches like: Multisensory Teaching
Approach, Universal Design for Learning,
Structured Pedagogy to deliver the remedial lesson

When is Remedial Education
Conducted?

average marks; they receive focused remedial support during holidays.

When and What
• Training of teachers and SEIS: From 5th- 20th July in 94
centres
• Remedial teaching: From 21st July to 26th August 2025

• Lower primary: Kinyarwanda, English, Maths


• Upper primary: Kinyarwanda, English, Maths, SET, SST

What is new in this Holiday
Remedial Learning Program?
• Engagement of Youth Volunteers through” Youth for
Children program: All secondary schools students, especially
TTC students will be mobilized to join HRL as assistant teachers.
We are targeting 34,000 youth, 1 per classrooms.
• Inclusion of P4-P5 students: The success of last holiday
remedial learning program informed the inclusion of P4-P5
students.
• Engagement of SEIs: SEIs will play a key role in the successfully
of the implementation of the Holiday Remedial learning.
• Direct transfer of funds to schools: Holiday remedial learning
funds will be directly transferred to schools. SEIs will facilitate the
reporting.
