of pigs that can be raised, each with its
own characteristics and suited to different
needs. In this presentation, we will discuss
some of the well-known types of pigs in
the Philippines and around the world.

THE PHILIPPINE NATIVE
• Indigenous animals belong to a

traits usually ascribed to a breed.
• The local pig or Philippine Native
pig belongs to the category, as they
are small and lack the anatomical
symmetry of standard breeds.
• General characteristics: small and
late maturing, mostly sold black or

back and with weak pasterns.

• The Landrace swine originated in
Denmark around 1895 from a cross
between the Large White hog from
England and native Danish swine.
• Landrace swine are characterized by their
long, lean bodies, white skin, and large,
drooping ears. They are known for their
prolificacy (producing large piglets),
excellent maternal care skills, and rapid
growth, making them a popular breed for
commercial pig production. Their meat is
lean and of high quality.
YORKSHIRE SWINE/LARGE
WHITE
The Yorkshire (also known SWINE

White) is a white-colored English
bacon breed, known for its
prolificacy and good mothering
qualities. It was developed in
Yorkshire, England, through
selection and crossing with the
Leicester hog. While known for its
large litters and milk production,

Characteristics:
•Their quiet nature, friendly behavior
and docile temperament are good for
the young people and for the new pig
farmers.
•They were long of limb, long in the snout
and flat in the rib.
•They were active, hardy, good rustlers,
and very prolific, but they were slow
feeders and late in maturing.
