WORLD BLOOD DONOR
DAY
Every year on 14 June, countries around the
world celebrate World Blood Donor Day
(WBDD).
The event , established in 2004, serves to
raise awareness of the need for safe blood and
blood products, and to thank blood donors for
their voluntary, unpaid life saving gifts of blood,
and to raise awareness of the need for regular
blood donations to ensure the quality, safety and
availability of blood and blood products for
patients in need.
World Blood Donor Day
Observed by All member states of
the World Health
Organization
Date 14 June
Next time 14 June 2019
Frequency Annual
World Blood Donor Day is one of the eight
official global public health campaigns
marked by the World Health Organization
(WHO), along with-
World Health Day,
World Tuberculosis Day,
World Immunization Week,
World Malaria Day,
World No Tobacco Day,
World Hepatitis Day,
and World AIDS Day.
Background
Transfusion of blood and blood products helps
and save millions of lives every year. It can help
patients suffering from life-threatening conditions
live longer and with high quality of life, and
supports complex medical and surgical procedures.
It also has an essential, life-saving role in maternal
and perinatal care and during the emergency
response to man-made and natural disasters.
Access to safe and sufficient blood and blood
products can help reduce rates of death and
disability due to severe bleeding during delivery
and after childbirth.
Blood stocks are also essential in
natural and man-made disasters.
Some blood types are rare, so
promoting the need for rare donor
types is also part of this event.
World Blood Donor Day is vital in
highlighting the need for blood
donors and regular donations.
In many countries, there is not an adequate supply of
safe blood, and blood services face the challenge of
making sufficient blood available, while also ensuring
its quality and safety.
An adequate supply can only be assured through
regular donations by voluntary unpaid blood donors.
The WHO’s goal is for all countries to obtain all their
blood supplies from voluntary unpaid donors by 2020.
In 2014, 60 countries have their national blood
supplies based on 99-100% voluntary unpaid blood
donations, with 73 countries still largely dependent on
family and paid donors.

History
World Blood Donor Day is celebrated
every year by the people in many countries
around the world on 14 June. It is celebrated
every year on the day of birthday anniversary of
Karl Landsteiner on 14 June 1868.
World Blood Donor Day celebration brings a
precious opportunity to all donors for celebrating
it on national and global level as well as to
commemorate the birthday anniversary of the
Karl Landsteiner ( a great scientist who won the
Nobel Prize for his great discovery of the ABO
blood group system)
Focus of this year’s
campaign
The theme of this year’s campaign is blood
donation as an action of solidarity.
It highlights the fundamental human values of
altruism, respect, empathy and kindness which
underline and sustain voluntary unpaid blood
donation systems.
We have adopted the slogan, “ Be there for
someone else. Give blood. Share life”, to draw
attention to the roles that voluntary donation
systems play in encouraging people to care for one
another and generate social ties and a united
community.
The campaign aims to highlight
stories of people whose lives have
been saved through blood donation,
as a way of motivating regular blood
donors to continue giving blood, and
to motivate people in good health
who have never given blood to begin
doing so, particularly young people.
Activitiesinclude commemorative
events, meetings, publication of
relevant stories, scientific
conferences, publication of articles in
national, regional and international
scientific journals, and other
activities that would help in
promoting the theme of this year’s
World Blood Donor Day.
The objectives of this year’s
campaign
to celebrate and thank individuals who
donate blood and to encourage those who
have not yet donated blood to start donating;
to raise wider awareness that blood donation
is an altruistic action that benefits all of
society and that an adequate supply can only
be ensured through regular donations by
voluntary, unpaid blood donors;
to highlight the need for committed, year-
round blood donation, in order to maintain
adequate supplies and achieve national
self-sufficiency of blood;
to focus attention on blood donation as an
expression of community participation in
the health system, and the importance of
community participation in maintaining
sufficient, safe and sustainable blood
supplies;
to promote the community values of
blood donation in enhancing community
solidarity and social cohesion and in
encouraging people to care for one
another and build a caring community;
to promote international collaboration and
ensure worldwide dissemination of and
consensus on the principles of voluntary
non-remunerated donation, while
increasing blood safety and availability.
Target audiences
The primary target audiences for World
Blood Donor Day are donors who regularly
give blood and healthy people who are
eligible to give blood but are not yet
occasional or regular donors.
Health officials at national level who are
responsible for setting national policy and
systems for blood donation and
transfusion are another important target
audience.
International partners, national
blood transfusion services, Red Cross
societies, donor associations, patient
groups and professional societies
each have an important role to play,
both in supporting countries to
achieve self-sufficiency in this area
and in disseminating campaign
messages.
International partners
WHO has worked with a number of partners to
promote voluntary blood donation through the
celebration of World Blood Donor Day since the first
one in 2004.
These include:
the International Federation of Blood Donor
Organizations,
the International Federation of Red Cross and Red
Crescent Societies and
the International Society of Blood Transfusion.

2018 events

Donor Day 2018 is Greece, through

The global event is held in Athens on
14 June 2018.
Key messages
A blood service that gives patients access
to safe blood and blood products in
sufficient quantity is a key component of
an effective health system.
An adequate supply can only be ensured
through regular donations by voluntary,
unpaid blood donors.
However, in many countries, blood
services face the challenge of making
sufficient blood available, while also
ensuring its quality and safety.
Stilltoday, only 62 countries get close to 100% of
their national blood needs through voluntary
unpaid blood donations, with 40 countries still
dependent on family donors and even paid
donors.
Thus World Blood Donor Day is vital to these
countries to raise awareness of blood donation
and thus increase supply in order to save as
many lives as possible.
WHO has been providing support to Member
States to strengthen service delivery and safety
and improve access to safe blood and blood
products for patients in need.
