When Did the Stone Age Happen?
- The Stone Age or Paleolithic
Period started around 30,000
BCE and continued until 3,000
BCE.
- It was a period of prehistory
when humans did not have any
systems of writing.
- It is called Stone Age because it
was a time when people used
stones as tools.
Geography
Where did the first humans appear?
- The first humans appeared in Africa and lived
together with other hominids.
- Africa became known as the “Cradle of
Humankind” because human life started there.
How did humans spread around
the world?
- A big climate change occurred over 13,000 years ago which is now
called the Ice Age.
- Some scientists believe that a huge comet striking the Earth
caused the Ice Age which froze large bodies of water.
- This created land bridges that made it possible for humans to
migrate our of Africa to Asia, then Europe, and then all over the
world.

What is a tool?
- A tool is something that helps you carry out a
task. You usually hold a tool in your hands.
How did the stone age people
make tools?
- During the Stone Age, humans lived as hunters and
gatherers.
- They needed tools to hunt and made tools from stones.
Later, they also started using wood to attach their stones.
- One of the earliest tools to be used was a hammerstone.
The name describes exactly what it was which is a stone
that was used as a hammer. It was used
- It was a round stone which was used to hit other stones to
make them into the shape they needed them to be.

Where did the first humans live?
- Archaeologists know that Stone Age people spent
time in caves because they found stone tools,
hearths, and cave paintings showing the life of
stone age people.
Did they all live in caves?
- Early humans lived in caves where caves where
available.
- But when there were no caves, they lived in tents
made of skins and bones of the animals they
hunted.

What did Stone Age People Wear?
- Stone Age people wore animal skins and fur from
the animals they hunted.
How did Early Humans make
clothes?
- Stone Age people sewed skins of animals and
sometimes left their fur on to wear during cold season.
- A bone needle was found in Siberia, which is believed
to be from around 50,000 years ago. This needle has a
hole for thread to go through.
- There is also evidence of Stone Age people using
shells, bones and wood to scrape the skin of an animal
clean.

Human Hunters
- Hunters hunted for big animals like the wholly
mammoths when it was possible.
- Hunters also hunted smaller animals like
mountain lions and boars.
Gatherers
- Stone Age people couldn’t survive just on the food they
caught from hunting.
- They also collected foods that grew naturally in the
wild.
- They collected fruits, nuts, mushrooms, berries, beans,
and honey.
The End of the Stone Age Era
What were the lasting achievements
of the Stone Age people?
- Even though they lived during the time when
there were no systems of writing to record their
achievements, there are many things that can be
considered their legacy.
- The Stone Age people are best remembered as
the discoverer of fire and the first makers of tools.
End of the Stone Age
- Around 5,000 years ago, humans in the Near East began working
with metal and making tools and weapons from bronze.
- This started the ending of the Stone Age era as people began
using tools and weapons made of metal.

How did the Early Humans discover
fire?
- The Stone Age period is by far the longest period
in the history of humans.
- It is the time when humans lived on the Earth
together with the dinosaurs.
- Before discovering how to build a fire, humans
ate the raw meat of what they hunted.
- The only possible explanation of how they
discovered fire is because a natural fire started
from thunder and lightning.
- Early humans used fire for warmth, protection,
and cooking.
