Geography
The Democratic Republic of
the Congo (DRC) has 26
provinces, ruled over by
governors.
It has a short coastline on the
Atlantic Ocean and borders
the Central African Republic,
South Sudan, Uganda,
Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania,
Malawi, Zambia, Angola,
Cabinda and Republic of the
Congo.
Most of DRC is composed of
the large plain of the Congo
basin. This basin is the area
of land that drains into the
river Congo.

The Congo River is the


second longest river in Africa,
after the river Nile.

Climate

Congo is so large that different


areas have different climates.

Some areas near the equator are


rainy and the temperature stays
around the mid 20℃.

Other areas in the south and north


are hotter and have less rainfall.

Some areas in the mountains are


significantly colder, with average
temperatures around 10℃.

Food
Poulet à la Moambé is the
national dish. This chicken
stew is cooked with spices.

Fufu is a dish that is popular


throughout the Democratic
Republic of the Congo.
Cassava, yam or plantains
are boiled, then mashed and
shaped into small balls. Fufu
is eaten with soups and
stews.

Fumbwa is one of the stews


often eaten with fufu. It is
made of spinach, onions and
tomatoes.

Flora and Fauna

DRC has an equatorial rainforest


around the centre and mangrove
forests on the coast.

Bamboo grows on some


mountains.

Chimpanzees, gorillas and


bonobos live in the forests.

DRC also has African forest


elephants, a smaller species than
the larger elephants of the
savanna.

Giraffes, wild boars, leopards,


lions, rhinoceros and crocodiles
can all be found too.

The DRC is home to a vast


array of regional styles of art.

Music is especially important.


Kinshasa, the capital city, is
known for producing music
that has influenced musical
traditions throughout Africa
and beyond.
