The Plot, Musical
and Theatrical
Elements of Opera
Opera tells a story through
music and singing, and expresses
the human experience through
emotive arias and ensembles.
Opera singers do not use
microphones to amplify their
voices, and the music is played
by an orchestra.
Different Musical
and Theatrical
Elements of the
Opera.
Group 1
Libretto - the text of an opera. It
contains the story or the plot of
the opera. Librettist, the person
who writes the libretto, and the
composer work closely together
to create the whole story of the
opera.
The libretto contains all the
words of the show, both written
and sung, along with stage
directions. It serves as the
foundation on which the music
and performances are built,
guiding the singers, musicians,
and production team in bringing
the opera to life.
Group 2
Score - the book that the
composer and librettist put
together. The score has all the
musical notes, words and
ideas to help the performers tell
the
Story.
the score is where the magic of
music comes alive, connecting
performers, conductors, and
audiences through notation and
interpretation.
Group 3
Recitative - Declamatory singing, used in
the prose parts and dialogue of opera.
Recitative may be accompanied
(accompagnato) or unaccompanied (secco).
(Recitative is any semi-spoken, semi-sung
non-repetitive part of an opera that
advances the action. Imagine it as the
storytelling portion of the opera, where
characters quarrel, confess love, and move
the plot forward)
Historically, recitative is where the action
happens quarrels between characters,
storytelling, love confessions, and the like.
Accompagnato employs the orchestra as an
accompanying body. Secco which means
that the singer is not accompanied by a full
orchestra, but rather by a harpsichord or
organ that provides a simple harmonic
accompaniment.
Group 4
An air or solo singing part sung by a principal
character. This song is what the public will
remember best when leaving the opera
house. Properly and well sung, a beautiful
aria can bring an audience to its feet and
decide the
fate of an entire opera.
(an aria is a solo piece sung in an opera or
another large-scale vocal work)
The word “aria” originates from
the Italian term for “air.” At its
core, an aria is a solo musical
piece sung within an opera or
another large-scale vocal work,
such as an oratorio.
Acapella- a melody sung without instrumental
accompaniment.
Cantabile- a singing style emphasizes smoothness.
Capo-head, the beginning. describes this return to the
beginning of the piece.
Coda-closing section appended to a movement or song.
It serves as a musical tail, concluding the main body of a
piece.
Dolce- sweetly and lively manner of singing.
Falsetto- a weaker and more airy voice usually in the
higher pitch ranges.
Vibrato- rapidly repeated slight pitch variation during a
sustained note, to give a richer and more varied sound.
For the Male Voice:
1. Tenor - highest male voice
2. Baritone - Middle male voice, lies
between Bass and Tenor voices. It is the
common male voice.
3. Bass - lowest male voice
