Traffic Signs - Visualbee

Traffic signs provide important information to road users through standardized designs that have been simplified internationally to facilitate travel. Signs fall into categories like warning, regulatory, and informational and use shapes, colors and symbols to clearly convey their messages. Variable message signs display temporary information to drivers to manage traffic flows or warn of changing conditions.

Traffic Signs or Road Signs

Traffic signs or road signs are signs erected at the side of roads to provide information to road users.
With traffic volumes increasing over the last decades many countries have simplified and standardized their signs to facilitate international travel where language differences would create barriers, and in general to help enhance traffic safety.

Traffic Signs or Road Signs

Principles of Signing
Traffic signing is effected by the use of road markings and traffic signals. Traffic signs must convey clear and unambiguous messages to road users so that they can b understood easily. All traffic signs used on highway must conform to the regulations which are periodically updated. Signs must sited so that the information is given to the user when they need it; neither too soon nor too late.

Categories of Traffic Signs

Upright Signs: which are themselves divisible into warning, regulatory and informatory signs. Road Markings Miscellaneous Signs

Upright Signs

Warning Signs: They give warning of hazards ahead. Warning signs are usually either triangular (black symbol within red border) or rectangular (white legend on a red background) Latter are used for temporary warnings.

Warning Signs

Regulatory Signs

These signs give notice of restriction or prohibition on speed, movement and waiting times of vehicles. They are mostly circular (red border indicating a negative instruction, blue background indicating a positive instruction) Exception is a stop sign (octagonal) and a give way sign (inverted triangle)

Regulatory signs

Informatory Signs

These give information about routes, places and facilities of particular value and interest to road users. They are either rectangular or flag type (i.e. pointed at one end). Color used depends on the road on which they are used. Directional signs fall within this category.

Informatory signs

Road Markings

Are used to convey a warning, a requirement or information except where associated with waiting or loading restrictions (in case they are yellow in color). They are usually made up of reflecting material Reflectors are usually white in color but red, green may b observed.

Road Markings

These may be: Signs placed temporarily on or near road to warn drivers. Red flags advising drivers to stop. Cylinders indicating the temporary division of carriage way. Cones used to define routes round obstructions. School crossing, patrol signs etc.

Direction Signs

Direction signing is used to guide traffic to its destination. Example: street name plates or those that give information to the drivers about the route.

Advanced Directional Sign (ADS) is placed before a junction is reached to give driver advanced information about their route choice. At highways or motorways they are placed one and a half mile ahead of, as well as at, the exit. They may be located by the side of the carriage way. The layout of ADS may be of MAP TYPE that shows the diagrammatic representation of a junction.

Types of Directional Signs

Types of Directional Signs

They may be of: STACK TYPE where the individual destination is stacked on above the other or the LANE DESTINATION TYPE where the carriage way is clearly marked into traffic lanes which are appropriate for different destination.

Advanced Directional Sign (ADS)

Types of Directional Signs

Directional signs (DS) repeats the information on the ADS but it is placed on the junction where the turning is actually to be made.

They may be FLAG TYPE but may incorporate an

arrow, depending on the type of junction. Route Confirmatory Sign is placed after the junction to give confirmation of the route number and destination ahead

Variable Message Traffic Signs

These are the kind of traffic signs that show variable or temporary information. It is useful where a message is not required to be

displayed permanently.
Its types includes: Mechanical or Electromechanical Signs (on which displayed message is changed by moving parts) Wholly Electrical Signs (on which messages are revealed when internal light source is switched on)

Examples of Variable Message Traffic Signs

Regulatory Signs (banned turns, no entry, bus lanes, two-way traffic etc.) Informatory Signs ( lane controls, facilities/ services, diversions etc.) Warning Signs (detection of over height vehicles approaching a low bridge)

Variable Message Traffic Signs

Environmental Impact of Direction Signs

There number and size should be kept to minimum with the need to provide adequate information to the driver. They should be placed by taking in account the presence of other prohibitory signs, traffic signals, street name plates, etc.
