Principles of Signing
Traffic signing is effected by the use of road markings and traffic signals. Traffic signs must convey clear and unambiguous messages to road users so that they can b understood easily. All traffic signs used on highway must conform to the regulations which are periodically updated. Signs must sited so that the information is given to the user when they need it; neither too soon nor too late.
Upright Signs: which are themselves divisible into warning, regulatory and informatory signs. Road Markings Miscellaneous Signs
Upright Signs

Warning Signs
Regulatory Signs
These signs give notice of restriction or prohibition on speed, movement and waiting times of vehicles. They are mostly circular (red border indicating a negative instruction, blue background indicating a positive instruction) Exception is a stop sign (octagonal) and a give way sign (inverted triangle)
Regulatory signs
Informatory Signs
These give information about routes, places and facilities of particular value and interest to road users. They are either rectangular or flag type (i.e. pointed at one end). Color used depends on the road on which they are used. Directional signs fall within this category.
Informatory signs
Road Markings

Direction Signs
Direction signing is used to guide traffic to its destination. Example: street name plates or those that give information to the drivers about the route.
Advanced Directional Sign (ADS) is placed before a junction is reached to give driver advanced information about their route choice. At highways or motorways they are placed one and a half mile ahead of, as well as at, the exit. They may be located by the side of the carriage way. The layout of ADS may be of MAP TYPE that shows the diagrammatic representation of a junction.
They may be of: STACK TYPE where the individual destination is stacked on above the other or the LANE DESTINATION TYPE where the carriage way is clearly marked into traffic lanes which are appropriate for different destination.
displayed permanently.
Its types includes: Mechanical or Electromechanical Signs (on which displayed message is changed by moving parts) Wholly Electrical Signs (on which messages are revealed when internal light source is switched on)
