What is IEC 61850?

The goal of the IEC 61850 standard
Interoperability The ability for IED’s from one or several
manufacturer to exchange information and use
the information for the their own functions.

Free configuration The standard shall support different philosophies

and allow a free allocation of functions e.g. it
must work equally well for centralized (RTU like) or
decentralized (SCS like) systems.

Long term stability The standard shall be future proof, i.e.

it must be able to follow the progress in
communication technology as well as
evolving system requirements.

Data access and transfer (services)
 For interoperability both data
and the data access
(i.e. services) have to be
standardized.
 Communication services are
used for
 Vertical communication
 Horizontal communication
 Time synchronization
 File transfer

What is IEC 61850?

Datasets, control blocks and clients, basics
 Datasets
 A “container” for signals (for example the position and
quality values of a circuit breaker) that will be sent as
one data packet on the communication bus.

What is IEC 61850?

Datasets, control blocks and clients, basics
 Control blocks
 Control blocks are the mechanism to control how and when
the data in the datasets are sent from the IED. It also provides
the senders address so that a receiving client knows from
whom this data comes.
 There are two kind of control blocks available;
 GOOSE Control Blocks, GCB’s
 MMS Control Blocks, RCB’s (Report Control Blocks)
 Clients
 Clients means the devices (IEDs or HSI systems) receiving
data. It can also be referred to as “Inputs”.
