Overview
Road transport is essential for mobility of people and goods
as well as it contribute for India’s development. The risk of
road accidents exposes people to injuries and fatalities.
The growth of population and lack of road infrastructure
leads to poor road traffic in India and which results in
unacceptable accidents, injuries and fatalities. In the year
2017, 4,64,910 road accidents were reported that claimed
1,47,913 human lives and 4,70,975 persons become
injured. Out of four and half lakh lives, 13.8 percentage
persons are pedestrians.
Understanding the problems
Pedestrian are facing lot of problems on the
expressways. Crossing the road is one of the
major problems. Due to the increase of fast
moving vehicles on the road, pedestrian has to
suffer more to cross the road, which may lead to
accidents. Accidents are also due to lack of
facilities, geometric features and guidelines.
Road traffic accidents are considered one of the
most important problems facing modern
societies. Safe walking on the road side and
protection of pedestrians are to be promoted
considering the risk factors.
Project objective
We always see that the safety of
driver is always given a lot of
importance, but we always forgot
that their are people walking on the
road called as pedestrians whose
safety should also be considered
and should also think on some
safety measure for the pedestrian.
An Autonomous Braking System (AEB) was
developed by various scientist in 2015. The
Autonomous Braking System (AEB) systems
start braking automatically if a collision is
imminent and the driver is not taking any
action (or is not doing so fast enough). AEB is
able to detect the distance of potential
collision and activate the braking system to
decelerate the vehicle with the purpose of
avoiding a collision, or at least mitigating its
impact.
The use of the environmental sensors with a brake
assist system will keep the driver in the alert
condition. Pedestrians are benefited by safety and
the fatalities are reduced and the system with
environmental sensors is more advantageous over
automatic emergency braking systems. Due to
vehicular movement, the pedestrians are not able to
cross the road at even at the time for pedestrian
crossing . In several cases, several vehicles stop on
the zebra crossing, so that pedestrians can able to
walk only on the road. Hence, this proposal is aimed
to provide a safety system for the pedestrians for
safely crossing the road during the pedestrian green
signal.
Methodology
The methodology adapted for automatic barrier
control in the zebra crossing of roads for pedestrian
safety is shown in figure 1.

ARDUINO

The block diagram of Pedestrian safety
system at signalized intersection consists of
Raspberry pi B3+, Relay, Solenoid value,
Vibration sensor, Web camera. When the red
light flashes, the steel plate acts as the
barrier between Pedestrian and the road. If
the vehicle accidentally hits the steel plate
then the web camera captures the number
plate of the particular vehicle.
Working
The automatic lifting of the barricade is done
successfully in the heavy traffic roads when the
signal goes red and the detection of the vehicle hit
against the steel plate is detected by the vibration
sensor and that, in turn, actuates the camera and
captures the defaulters. The barrier itself acts as the
road; vehicle can easily run without any disturbance
during green signal. This prototype concentrates on
north side of the road.
As shown in the figure when the
traffic signal flashes red then
automatically the barrier lifts
and the vehicles are indicated to
stop. Unfortunately any vehicles
hit the barrier then the camera
which located at the corner will
capture the number plate of that
vehicle and send that to control
room.

(i) Traffic light
Traffic lights are used to control the vehicular
movements in urban areas especially to avoid road
accidents and intersection collision. Generally, Traffic
lights consist of three coloured lights which are red,
green and amber. Red colour indicates to stop the
vehicle before the crossing line. Amber signal indicates
“get ready for vehicular movement”. Green light
indicates to initiate the vehicle
The traffic light used is four-way traffic light signals. In four-way traffic signals have
four lanes and each lane has separate traffic lights. This system aims to protect the
pedestrian from road accidents.
The four way traffic light control using programmable logic controller and which acts
as a source for developing source for this work. Table 2. gives the sequence of
operation of the four way traffic light.
Arduino
Arduino is an open-source
platform used for building
electronics projects. Arduino
consists of both a physical
programmable circuit board (often
referred to as a microcontroller)
and a piece of software, or IDE
(Integrated Development
Environment) that runs on your
computer, used to write and
Ultrasonic ranging
module
This HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Ranging Sensor is
a non-contact distance measurement
module with stable performance and high
ranging accuracy. with the inexpensive
price, The measurment range if it can be
upto 5M, which would be helpful for your
project such as robotic Obstacle Avoidance
and so on.
Servo motor
A servo motor is a type of motor that can
rotate with great precision. Normally this type
of motor consists of a control circuit that
provides feedback on the current position of
the motor shaft, this feedback allows the servo
motors to rotate with great precision. If you
want to rotate an object at some specific
angles or distance, then you use a servo
motor. It is just made up of a simple motor
which runs through a servo mechanism. If
motor is powered by a DC power supply then it
is called DC servo motor, and if it is AC-
powered motor then it is called AC servo
Bridge board
As the name suggests, the term
breadboard can be derived from
two terms namely bread & board.
Initially, this was used to cut the
bread into pieces. Further, it was
called a breadboard & it was used in
electronics projects and electronic
devices in the year 1970. A
breadboard is also known as a
solderless board because the
component used on the breadboard
does not need any soldering to
Jumper wire
A jump wire (also known as jumper, jumper
wire, DuPont wire) is an electrical wire, or group
of them in a cable, with a connector or pin at each
end (or sometimes without them – simply
"tinned"), which is normally used to interconnect
the components of a breadboard or other
prototype or test circuit, internally or with other
equipment or components, without soldering
When we assemble each and every
part the internal construction will
look like this.
Conclusion
The prototype discussed in this paper prevents
the pedestrian from an accident during heavy
traffic areas. By implementing this smart setup,
cops will be able to find out the defaulters easily.
This is more compatible and economical when
setting up on a large scale. The pedestrian
collisions occur due to the unethical behaviour of
the drivers skipping the signals can be avoided
with the presented barrier model. By introducing
automatic barriers for the zebra crossing which
will automatically lift during the pedestrian
crossing and lay down during vehicle traffic
