Finding

Reserves
USING THE CLASSIC CATALOG
What is a course reserve?
Professors of any course at the University can request that a book, CD, DVD,
etc. be held behind the circulation desk and loaned as a reserve for the
duration of time they request. The item can be either belong to the library
or the professor personally.
The purpose of reserve items is to allow easier access to a group of
students who may need these materials for their coursework.
Reserve items are available for students in the class, as well as any other
library patron with an active account with no blocks.
Using the Catalog to find Reserves
Click on the
Course
Reserves link on
the library
homepage.
Using the Catalog to find Reserves
Click on the “Search Course
Reserves” box.
The “Classic Catalog” interface
will appear.
Note: You can also get to the
Classic Catalog directly from
the main library webpage.
Using the Classic Catalog to find Reserves
Once you are in the
Classic Catalog, click
the tab that reads
“Course Reserve.”
Using the Classic Catalog to find Reserves
Search terms on this page are selected
from drop-down menus in each category.
Almost always, the most efficient search
uses only the course dropdown, leaving
the others as “any.”
You can also search by Instructor or
Department if needed. Large courses
with multiple instructors may not appear
in the results.
Searching by section will not give useful
results.
Using Classic Catalog to find Reserves
Search for the
course by
department and
specific course
number in the
drop-down menu.

Sample Course search results
Because there are three results
which all have the same title, it’s
likely these are multiple copies
of the same (or similar) books
for this single course.
These copies may be located in
different libraries, and appear as
separate records in the catalog.
Using Classic Catalog to find Reserves
Click on the title to
see more details
about the book.
Using Classic Catalog to find Reserves
This leads to an item record.
Remember to check the
location of the item carefully
and confirm that the book is
the correct edition.
There can be copies of a
reserve item at more than one
library.
This book is over at Bird Library
Locating Reserves in the reserves cabinet
Reserves at Carnegie Library are located in the cabinet directly behind the main
circulation desk.
They are arranged by the course abbreviation and number.
For example: BIO 101 BIO 104 CIE 103 PHY 400
You may go to the course location on the shelf and find a white plastic marker that
refers you to another course. We use those when a book is on reserve for multiple
courses.
Locating Reserves in the reserves cabinet
Versions, titles, and authors can vary slightly, so double-check to ensure you
have the right item.
Here at Carnegie, we sometimes keep previous editions of high-demand
items on reserve. If so, “previous edition” will be clearly marked on the spine
of the book. Always ask the patron if a previous edition is acceptable before
charging it out.
If the student is not sure the book is correct, you can ask if they have the
course syllabus with them. You can also check the SU bookstore listing, see
the professor’s information on the departmental webpage, etc.
Can’t find a reserve item?
If you’re unable to a reserve item:
 Check to see if the book is already checked out. Let the patron know when the item is
due, and ask if they would like us to not renew the item when it comes back. We do not
place holds on reserve items.
 Sometimes a student asks for an item that a professor may not yet have placed on
reserve. Also, reserve items take time to process even after the request is submitted. A
staff member can check Ares to see if the item is in process.
 Double-check to make sure the item is not at another library. The reserve might also
be an e-book.
If you still can’t find it, always get a staff member to help you!
Reserve Loan Periods
The loan periods are:
 2 hours
 3 hours
 24 hours
3 days
7 days
Rarely, an item will be restricted for in-library-
use-only. You should see that clearly marked on
the book. If so, let the patron know that they’re
not permitted to take the book outside.
The loan period is usually selected by the
professor.
Reserve loan periods vary per item.
Charging Out Reserves in Voyager
 Reserves circulate through Voyager, just like ordinary books.
Media (DVDs, CDs, etc.) on reserve also circulate through Voyager. For the most part, you will
not need to deal with these at Carnegie.
Check out a reserve book in Voyager by placing it on the RFID pad as usual. Double-check the
due date when charging out reserves.
Be sure to print a receipt for the patron as well as tell them the loan period.
“This book is due in two hours.”
Reserves “Do not renew”
If someone comes to the desk asking for a reserve book that is already checked
out, ask them if they want us to not renew the item when it is returned. If so, put
a “do not renew” note at the main circulation desk that includes: course number,
item, time and date.
Many of the larger courses have multiple copies of the same book, and this
situation should not happen very frequently.
Do not renew any reserve items before checking if someone else is waiting for
the item. If someone else is waiting for the book, please DO NOT RENEW the
item. If you are not sure, please ask a staff member.
