Shock deprives organs and tissues of oxygen, building up waste products. It causes altered mental status, fast heart rate, low blood pressure, and decreased urine output. Shock affects the kidneys, heart, lungs, brain and intestine by reducing blood flow and oxygen delivery, leading to organ dysfunction and failure. The kidneys may experience acute tubular necrosis and renal failure. The heart works harder with less effectiveness. Lungs can develop injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome due to reduced blood flow. The brain may show restlessness or coma. The intestine may develop paralysis and bleeding from low blood flow.
