- 1. ANALYSIS OF ARTICLES- DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD 1 NME Mise en scene created by graffiti wall background.... This reinforces that hip-hop element and adds intimacy within the image as it refers back to ‘Dizzee Rascal’s’ background. This also adds aesthetical interest with vibrant colours and unconventional designs. This reflects the ethics and morals of NME and adds an element of mischievousness. Main Image The main image is a medium shot of ‘Dizzee Rascal’. His coat corresponds to the colour of the ‘NME’ logo. This makes a clear connection between the artist and the magazine and builds a form of relationship up between them, the use of a medium shot helps to show this effectively by revealing the background, gesture and clothing. The red jacket allows him to stand out from the vibrant background emphasising how he is the centre of attention not only in the magazine but in the current music scene also. His pose suggests that he is spraying on the wall, this highlights the rebellious nature within the genre and his personality allowing the reader to relate to him successfully. Page number NME title Date Gives the reader information about where they are in relation to the magazine and represents the make of the magazine once again. By-line Gives credit to the author and photographer. This is relatively small as it isn't a major feature. Sub heading This is set in the same colour as the rest of the text yet is larger and includes bold fonts in places to stand out. This lays the foundations for the article. Main heading/headline This adds an element of comedy and irony. It gives the reader a snippet of background information suggesting that ‘Dizzee’ has come good and transferred from ‘Tags’ to ‘Riches’. This text is in bold, block capitals which corresponds to the other fonts used in the magazine, makes an immediate statement to the reader and reflects ‘Dizzee’s’ bolshie personality. 4 columns –notice text wraps around the image of the radio These four columns are clearly structured, this gives the article typical features needed yet wraps around the image of the radio, this allows the image to blend nicely yet hints that music is the focus of the text and that this is the dominant topic. Caption saying ‘Dizzee’ This clarifies who the article is about and gives the artist more exposure and advertisement. The text is surrounded by a splash which reintroduces that hip-hop, rebellious element. The text is in white which contrasts nicely with the back splash. Second image used is.... a stereo, this reflects the large musical element within the article and implies that the artist’s style is slightly old school using an old stereo. Background This follows on from the image page, this includes an element of symmetry and allows the article to flow seamlessly, although, this is muted slightly to ensure that it doesn’t detract the readers focus away from the text. Copy (text) begins with a large letter Y using Drops Cap This states clearly where the text starts making an immediate statement, this reflects how important the text is and corresponds to the large bold font of the main heading.
- 2. Analysis of written article The article itself is basically about..... Dizzee Rascal’s dominants within the photo shoot which is displayed on the image page. It highlights how times have changed for Dizzee and how he asserts his presence like ‘he owns it’. It is also about how popular he has suddenly become as ‘Outside, kids are congregating’ and how he loves every minute of his success recently picking up a ‘GQ Award for Solo Artist Of The Year’. This are looking up for Dizzee. The style of the article is....... Relatively consistent as it flows seamlessly relating all areas within the article. It explains the situation through the text and uses a pun in the header to add that humorous element. The sub heading is logical and makes a clear summarisation of the text allowing the reader to feel familiar with the text. It is written in 4 short columns each of approx75-100 words This is structured well throughout the article as it flows nicely around images and expresses exactly what the author wanted to say clearly and concisely. The main heading/headline is quite dramatic...... A pun is used to add that element of comedy yet dramatises the way that Dizzee has suddenly become famous. The use of alliteration ‘Tags To’ allows the heading to flow like speech when read which makes the reader feel comfortable. Also the black, bold font becomes the main focus of the written article dominating around half of the page. The brevity within the headlines summarises exactly what has happened within Dizzee’s life and reinforces his focus and desire to succeed.

ANALYSIS OF ARTICLES- DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD 2 Q magazine Mise en scene created by greyscale effect, costume and gesture The greyscale effect creates a sense of irony as the image is so understated, this is juxtaposed by how outrageous her personality is. By doing this the red ‘L’ on the written article stand out very clearly. The gesture and body pose suggests an element o promiscuity adding excitement and interest within the reader. Main Image This is a medium close up, by using this particular shot the nonchalant facial expression is highlighted yet the pose of Lady Gaga can be clearly recognised, as can the type of clothing she is wearing. She is also looking directly at the camera, this personalizes the article and makes the reader feel as if she is directly addressing them. Page number Q title, date and issue number The page number informs the reader of where they are in relation to the magazine. The issue numbers gives information to the reader on what issue this specific magazine is. The ‘Q’ title represents the name of the magazine, all of these features are situated in the bottom right of the header. By placing them in a discrete place it doesn’t detract attention away from the features within the article yet still remains noticeable. 3 columns situated behind the letter ‘L’ The three columns suggest an element of order and restriction, this is contrasted by Lady Gaga’s outrageousness within the pose and her unconventional hairstyle. The large red ‘L’ adds a hint of promiscuity, which is reinforced through the mise en scène created by the use of costume. Also red implies sexiness and femininity which is reflected through Lady Gaga. Caption saying Lady Gaga This states exactly what the focus of the article is and how important she is. The word ‘lady’ has been put in italics, this emphasises the femininity and elegance within Lady Gaga’s presence and contrasts with the normal ‘GAGA’ font implying that there are two sides to the artist. Main section begins with a large letter S using Drops Cap This states exactly where the important information begins as this section starts by highlighting her success with her massive hit ‘Just dance’. By the use of a large sized, bold letter ‘S’ it stands out as soon as the reader looks at it and informs the reader of exactly where the significant information begins. The use of red suggests that… although Lady Gaga is sexy and promiscuous there is a possibly of danger due to her unpredictable nature. The use of red complements the white background and greyscale image, by doing this a connection is made between the ‘L’ and the small ‘Q’ title in the bottom right. This catches the eye of the reader as this logo is the only other red feature in the article and connects the article to the name of the magazine.
- 4. Analysis of written article The article itself is basically about..... how Lady Gaga has become the ‘biggest and the most extreme pop star on the planet’. The written article explains how she has become this global superstar and states a few of the extreme acts of craziness that she has given to the world over the last few years. The article also explains her pathway to ultimate success. The style of the article is....... very formal, the language is factual and relatively corporate, excluding the outrageous quotes. The article flows nicely and reflects Lady Gaga’s road to success well. It is written in 3 medium sized columns each of approx 400-450 words This is appropriate as there is enough text within the article to portray a clear recollection of Lady Gaga’s life in show business, yet on the other hand isn't too long that it bores the reader causing them to lose interest. The use of colours complement the article because… The colours complement the article as the dark grey text relates back to the greyscale image yet stands out against the white background also. The red ‘L’ over the text reflects Lady Gaga’s promiscuity and mysterious personality yet also complements the white background and relates back to the colour of the ‘Q’ logo. - 5. ANALYSIS OF ARTICLES- DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD 3 Smash hits Mise en scene created by the use of costume and gesture. The costumes suggest that they have been ‘go-karting’, this is reinforced by the use of action shots. The alternate costumes highlight the relationship that the boys have within the band. Their relaxed gestures and body positions imply that they are cool people and their helmets reinforce the karting element. Main Image The main image is a long group shot, this is effective as it shows their costumes, poses and a reasonable area of the background. This reinforces that element of unity within the band and establishes where they are and what they are doing. The Shocker The shocker is used as a form of advertisement. This particular shocker informs the reader of the possibility of winning something, this automatically increases interest and inclination to read on as more information can be found throughout the rest of the magazine. This shocker is in the shape of an arrow suggesting that the reader needs to go somewhere to find out more, the words ‘WIN!’ are in block capitals standing out in white. The use of the exclamation mark adds an element of assertiveness and authority. 1 column situated to the far left This shows that the main focus is towards the images and produces a more aesthetical article. The font is simple and black allowing it to be easily eligible against the white background and clearly represents the written article. Extra text in the top right This stands out slightly from the pink, white and black colour scheme as the majority of the text is yellow. A 3d effect has been put on the text to give the article a more dynamic presentation. The text hints to the reader that there are interesting this to discover within the article making the reader want to read on and keeping the readers interest. Large heading The large heading reflects how young and generally inexperienced the members are stating that they are ‘boy racers’. The heading is very eye catching as it is outlines in white which contrasts nicely with the main image. The use of captions The captions introduce an element of comedy using rhetorical questions to reinforce this. The captions also give the reader extra specific information regarding that actual image. Use of action shots The action shots add excitement to the magazine whilst giving the images depth and variety to add aesthetical interest. The action shots are situated all over the spread showing you their experience of the day more visually as opposed to in the text.
- 6. Analysis of written article 3 The article itself is basically about..... The band members of ‘McFly’ on a day out go-karting and how they enjoyed the experience. The style of the article is....... relatively humorous yet simple, this makes for easy reading and a generally happy article. It is written in 1 short column each of approx110-130 words This complements the images nicely giving extra information providing quotes. Yet on the other hand it doesn’t over power the images so the article still remains visual. The use of colours complement the article because… the colour pink has been incorporated into the colour scheme, this colour is associated with comedy and hapiness so therefore fits well will this article. The white background allows the images and text to stand out nicely overall creating a successful article.
