A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in English III
                                      Remedial Instruction

    I.      Objectives
            At the end of the lesson the student is expected to:
                    acquire new words and use each in sentence;
                    identify the characters and events in the story;
                    put in sequence the events in the story; and
                    write a summary of the story that will include characters, setting, conflict and
                    resolution

    II.     Subject Matter
                  Focus: Elements of short story
                  Springboard: The Last Leaf by O. Henry
                  Materials: Handout, painting, visual aids, dictionary

    III.    Procedure
               A. Pre-reading
                      1. Motivation

                        The teacher will show a painting and ask the student if she had ever
                        painted, what is it she painted and what is it that she consider her
                        masterpiece?

                        2. Vocabulary Development

                        The student will give the meaning of the words below using a dictionary:

                        1.   approach
                        2.   pneumonia
                        3.   vine
                        4.   survive
                        5.   masterpiece

                        After knowing the meaning the student will use the words in her own
                        sentences.

                B. During- Reading
                      1. The teacher will give the student a copy of the short story The Last
                          Leaf by O. Henry. The student will read the story silently.

2. As the student read the text, the teacher will ask the student to
                           underline the name of the characters, the setting and the words listed in
                           the vocabulary development.

                C. Post-reading
                      The teacher will ask the student the ff. questions:
                      1. Who are the characters in the story?
                      2. Where and when did the story happen?
                      3. What did Mr. Behrman paint before he died?
                      4. Try to describe his masterpiece.
                      5. What did Mr. Behrman's painting do for Johnsy to help her survive?
                      6. What feeling did it give her?
                      7. Why does Sue call "The Last Leaf" Behrman's masterpiece?
                      8. What is the theme of the story The Last Leaf by O. Henry?
                      9. Put these line in correct order:

                            Ten Lines from The Last Leaf

                                Here are ten lines from the end of the story. Put them into the
                            correct order to find out how Mr. Behrman created his masterpiece.
                            Try to do this without looking at the book.

                             a) There was a light he had taken outside.                       ___
                             b) Mr. Behrman died of pneumonia today in the hospital.          ___
                             c) There was green and yellow paint.                             ___
                             d) He was helpless with pain.                                    ___
                             e) He painted his great masterpiece before the last leaf fell.   ___
                             f) And they found some things.                                   ___
                             g) The night had been so cold and wild.                          ___
                             i) There were materials for painting.                            ___
                            h) Someone found him in his room.                                 ___
                             j) His clothes were as wet and cold as ice.                      ___

    IV.     Evaluation
            In your quiz notebook: Write a summary of the short story that includes the
            characters, setting, conflict and resolution.
