- 1. Summer Reading Essay: A Character Description An artist draws a sketch to give a quick impression of a person. A writer can accomplish the same goal with words. Like a sketch, a character description includes details about how the person feels, what the person does, and what the person says, that can give readers a quick impression. Using the following instructions and the example, write a description of a character from one of the enrichment books you read for the summer. Your paper should be typed, double-spaced, and be at least a page and a half. The paper is due Monday, August 18. Please write a five-paragraph essay that includes all of the following items: Introduction: States the author and title Gives the character, setting, and a BRIEF summary statement States a thesis with 3 areas of preview 3 Body Paragraphs: Shares a character trait in each paragraph Shows evidence through actions, thoughts, and dialogue (should cite page numbers from the novel) Conclusion: Restates the main idea (thesis and areas of preview) Ties all paragraphs together *See attached rubric/example and pay attention to the notes in the margin* A successful character description should Describe the personality and physical appearance of the character Give a main impression of the person Include dialogue, descriptions, and other devices that show, rather than tell, what the character is like Have a clearly organized structure with an effective beginning and a strong conclusion
