Five Themes of Geography Location Place Region Movement Human Environmental Interaction
Where are things located? A location can be EXACT/ABSOLUTE or RELATIVE. Exact location is a specific address. For example, Woodland JHS 1 E. Poplar, Fayetteville, AR, 72703. Or latitude and longitude coordinates, 36˚ 12’53.62” N 94˚12’38.03”W. A relative location is using landmarks or familiar places to explain directions. For example, Fayetteville is south of Springdale; or Woodland is behind AQ; or Target is out by the mall.
To determine what makes a place different or unique from other places. To determine distinguishing characteristics of a place. Climate, language, religion, jobs, or traditions can be included. The climate of NW Arkansas is temperate/we experience four seasons.
Our city/area/state is unique or distinguishable because of the Razorbacks, Wal Mart HQ, Bill Clinton, the only state to naturally produce diamonds in the US, etc. Salt Lake City is defined by having Mormon origins and a large Mormon population (religious characteristic).
Determining relationships between people, places and their physical surroundings. How have people changed the environment to suit their needs? Have they harmed the environment in these improvement efforts? For example, our city faced a debate over the destruction of 200+ year old trees for the building of Steele Crossing (Kohl’s Dept. Store) NEGATIVE. Run-off from chicken processing plants in AR pollute water tables NEGATIVE. For example, OK sued the state of AR because of this NEGATIVE.
Fayetteville has an excellent recycling program POSITIVE. Rapid growth in our area changes the face of the land for new home construction, but creates jobs and provides shelter NEGATIVE & POSITIVE.
Determine the patterns of movement of people, goods, products, and ideas. This discussion establishes major modes of transport in the area, major exports/imports and ways in which people share information. In our area, Tyson moves products. JB Hunt provides the mode of transport in which to move the products (WM store goods, chickens, etc.). The University of Arkansas moves ideas and information and teaches people how to participate in this process.
Regions are defined by vegetation and geographical classification. For example, we live in the south, in Northwest Arkansas, the Ozarks, etc. Within Fayetteville, you might live in the Historic District, Candlewood, or the Mt. Sequoyah area.
