The Secrets of Beating Stress & Living Healthier Presented By: Henderson Chiropractic Center
Some Statistics: The American Medical Association stated that stress was the cause of 80-85% of all human illness and disease or at the very least had a detrimental effect on our health. Every week, 95 million Americans suffer some kind of stress related symptom for which they take medication. American businesses lose an estimated $200-$300 billion dollars per year to stress related productivity loss and other cost.
How Big of a Problem? The American Institute of Stress in Yonkers, New York, estimates that 90 percent of all visits to doctors are for stress-related disorders. In women, stress has been linked to fatigue, hair loss, bad complexion, insomnia, and disruption of the menstrual cycle.
Current Research Current research states the amount of stress that an older adult experiences in their lifetime is the same amount that a teenager will experience in one year.
Major Life Stressors: Death of a close friend Change to different work Increased arguments with spouse Mortgage or loan for major purchase Foreclosure on mortgage or loan Death of a spouse Divorce Marital separation Imprisonment Death of a close relative Personal injury or illness Marriage Fired from a job Begin or end school Change in living conditions Changing personal habits Problems with your boss Change in work hours/conditions Change in residence or school
Emotional, Chemical and Structural Emotional stress is the kind of stress most people think of when stress is mentioned, but there are many different kinds of stress. There is physical stress, from heavy physical work, poor posture, structural misalignments, lack of sleep and being overweight. There is chemical stress from ingesting food additives, exposure to pollutants and consumption of sugar and alcohol. Changes in blood sugar are also a form of chemical stress.
Long-Term Effects of Stress Exposure to stress on a long-term basis can be debilitating both physically and mentally. In the short-term the release of hormones produce tense muscles, queasiness and an increase in breathing and heart rates. Long-term complaints that are stress related include: Allergies, Anxiety and depression, Digestive disorders, Fatigue, Headaches and migraine, Heart disease, High blood pressure, Insomnia, Irritable bladder, Irritable bowel syndrome, Menstrual problems in women, Mouth and peptic ulcers, Muscular aches and pains, Palpitations, Panic attacks, Eczema, Ulcerative colitis
How the Autonomic Nervous System works: Chemical Physical Emotional These 3 types of stressors cause the release of “stress hormones” such as adrenaline and cortisol into the bloodstream. Why do we experience stress?
Some long-term effects… High blood pressure, depression, skin problems, headaches, back pain, insomnia, digestive disorders, heart disease and stroke have all been related to extended periods of stress.
Effects on the Immune System… Research findings indicate that stress (Physical, Chemical, Emotional) can have a negative effect on the immune system and the way the body functions.
Emotional, Chemical and Structural Situations are not always controllable, but stress is. Stress is cumulative. Emotional stress, structural stress and chemical stress all affect the body the same way.
It’s All In Your Head Every person reacts differently to stress. What's stressful to one person may be all in a day's work for another. “Type A” personalities vs. “Type B” personalities
Stress affects everybody every day, and for the most part stress offers the push we need to respond to a pressing situation. From trying to get out of the house on time to start a new job or giving a presentation, stress is your response to physical, chemical, emotional or environmental factors. Stresses can help keep our bodies strong and minds alert, but chronic stress can have devastating effects. Stress Relief:
Stress Relief: Fortunately there are a variety of natural, drug-free approaches to provide stress relief. There is no one solution to handling stress. Everyone must focus on allowing their body to function properly so that they are better able to handle the stress they encounter.
One Sure-Fire Method For Reducing Stress: Chiropractic Care How can this be possible? Before we can understand the connection between stress reduction and Chiropractic care, we must first understand what coordinates every function within the body.
What is the master control center of the body? + = Nervous System BRAIN SPINE Q: A:
Nervous System “Every function of the human body is under the control of the nervous system. Its function is to coordinate all the other organs and structures and to relate the individual to his environment.” Source: Gray’s Anatomy, 29th edition, p. 4
Nervous System The Brain is protected by the skull, and the spinal cord is surrounded by 24 moveable vertebrae – these are like the circuit breakers of the nervous system. Cervical Region Thoracic Region Lumbar Region
Nervous System Your brain monitors every cell, muscle, gland, organ, and system in your body by sending and receiving information via the spine.
No Interference One would deduce that if you want your entire body to function at its maximum potential to deal with stress in the best way possible, you need a nervous system that is CLEAR of any and all interference.
That’s Where Chiropractic Care Comes In! Subluxations are vertebrae that have misaligned and cause nerve interference.
Subluxations When vertebrae (our body’s circuit breakers) become misaligned (subluxated), they interfere with our nervous system and therefore the brain’s ability to send and receive essential information.
Subluxations These misaligned (subluxated) vertebrae are like “blown circuits” in your house. If your brain cannot communicate fully with your body, how can your body effectively react to stresses in your life?
Subluxations Interference to the nervous system will severely interfere with your brains ability to communicate with a specific muscle, organ, gland, or system of the body.
Research Studies at the University of Colorado have proven that organs and body parts that are supplied by these nerves are severely affected.

Chiropractic Care The spine is similar to the links of a chain and is only as strong as it’s weakest link. Anxiety and stress frequently attack the weak links (vertebrae) of the spine, and the effect on the spine is general muscular tension, headaches, migraine, neck pain and back pain. This pain can then aggravate the stress resulting in a vicious circle of pain and stress.
Chiropractors understand that interference to the nervous system creates a situation whereby various parts of the body (including internal organs and glands) cannot function at their full potential.
Chiropractic Care Removes Interference When the spine and nervous system are clear of interference, your body can function at its maximum performance! And that’s why Chiropractic has become an essential part of many people’s lives. It’s the NEW drug-free approach to stress management!
The Myths About Stress STRESS DOES NOT AFFECT ME I CAN HANDLE STRESS IT'S ONLY STRESS I WILL HAVE A WARNING SIGN
Your Tools to Manage Stress In order of priority: Nerve Flow Oxygenation Muscle Water Flow Nutrition
Healthy Responses to Stress Nervous System Posture Checks Daily Postural Exercises Maintenance Chiropractic Adjustments Oxygen Breathing Drills (Yoga, Tai Chi) Cardiovascular Exercise Muscle Stretching Massage Therapy Toning & Strengthening Exercises
Healthy Responses to Stress Nourishment Quality of decisions Choose whole, unprocessed foods – 6 to 9 fruits & vegetables Water Drink water (1/2 your body weight equals the amount of ounces of water needed per day)
Stress Reduction Exercises Reverse Shoulder Rolls Step 1: Inhale and elevate shoulders Step 2: Pull shoulders back, hold breath 3-8 seconds Step 3: Exhale and relax shoulders Abdominal Breathing Step 1: Inhale and stomach should stick out (round) Step 2: Exhale and stomach should tighten (flatten)
Stress Cover-ups You can cover-up a headache with aspirin ( temporarily ) You can cover up a muscle spasm with anti-inflammatory or muscle-relaxer medications ( temporarily ) YOU CAN'T COVER UP YOUR POSTURE
Spinal Specialists Analyze Posture POSTURE: YOUR FIRST SIGN OF STRESS
Do you still want to wait? A forward head position of 3 to 5 inches adds hundreds of pounds of stress to the neck!
Look At Your Posture You can’t cover it up So don’t try Correct it
Stress Inventory Now is the time to detect your level of stress. Are you reacting or responding to stress? New formulas to rebuild you response to stress.
Respond: Don’t React NO COVERING UP SIGNALS ACT TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE
