This document provides information about age-related macular degeneration (AMD), including what it is, the two main forms of AMD (dry and wet), risk factors, genetic factors, and epidemiological studies. AMD is a leading cause of blindness in older adults and results from breakdown of the macula, which is responsible for central vision. While genetics play a role, modifiable risk factors like smoking and diet can also influence risk. Multiple genetic loci have been associated with AMD based on large epidemiological studies.
