Basic setup for Google Analytics in WordPress as
well as configuring ecommerce and form tracking
If you do not already have a Gmail email address, I suggest
creating one and using it to create all your Google accounts that
will be associated with your website.
Connecting the dots
Google User ID
Later in the set up, Google will ask you to select your industry -
know this beforehand. For example, Beauty & Fitness, Health, Real
Estate, Shopping (eCommerce), etc.

▪ Select “Additional Options”. Enable the button on
the right and then enter your URL.
▪ Select “Create Universal Analytics” property only.

You’ll be asked to complete three sections:
Setting up Google Analytics
Adding your code
You can use one of the many plugins to add your code to
the <head> of your website, but for this exercise I’ll be
using “Google Analytics Dashboard for WordPress by
MonsterInsights”.

1. Follow the prompts within the plugin to connect your
Google Analytics account to your website.
2. If you do not see your website in the list of accounts,
click the link that will be displayed on the screen for
further assistance.
3. Once you have completed this process, tracking will
be enabled.
*Note: you will only need to enable “Use Global Site Tag”
if you already have MonsterInsights enabled on your
website.

1. Log out of the website.
2. Go to the Homepage on desktop and
your mobile device.
3. Open Google Analytics in another tab or
window.
4. Select Realtime > Overview
You should see your devices listed there.
• Desktop visitors will display in Orange.
• Mobile visitors will display in Green.

To view the data for eCommerce and Forms, go to
Insights > Reports.
Select the appropriate link from the top.

• Never start the funnel with homepage “/” because they count / as all pages.
• Best to start the funnel with product landing pages and make sure you Require the First Step.
• If you’re using Destination Funnel, it’s best to use Begins with vs Equals to.
• Always test your funnel data to ensure it matches Ecommerce cart data.
• If you see 100% for any step, don’t believe it. There’s likely something wrong with your set up.
• If you see abandonment is high on a specific step, then use exit intent popups, live chat prompts, and /
or screen recording to identify what’s the cause and then fix it.
