Analyzing Survey Results
From my results, I can clearly see that
there is a larger proportion of people
(61%) that are between the ages of 18-24.
This tells me that I need to cater my
magazine towards a relatively young
target audience with certain content, but
also design the magazine in such a way
where it would visually appeal to a mature
audience. This would mean that I could
use bold colours that are more neutral
based, rather than bright pinks etc, with a
layout that is less busy from fonts, colours
and images. I could make the magazine
appear neater through focusing on the
main image and no other distractions and
two types of fonts to differentiate the title
of my magazine and the cover lines. I
think that this would be a suitable
approach for this magazine as I think it
would be a lot more successful which
would link better to my target audience.
My survey shows a female orientation in
compared to the male gender. However,
despite these results I would want my
magazine to apply to both genders
rather than specifically limiting myself to
one gender style. I think that the
outcome of my magazine in its design
would determine what gender
orientation it would be, however I want
to be able to achieve a balance in the
design and content without a large
focus to one of the other. There is a
possibility that I would have male
readers with almost 20% of the answers
are male, so I think that there is
possibilities of making my magazine
targeting both genders rather than just
one. I think that this will also enable me
to choose from a range of colours
without stereotyping to appeal to both
genders, rather than just using pinks
and blues.
Looking at my results, I can see that most
people would by magazines such as NME and
Kerrang, both at 33%. I think this shows a
significant contrast in the style and content of
the magazines that I’ve selected the audience
to choose from. I think that this indicates the
readers would rather read a magazine with a
diverse range of music content than just one.
Originally I wanted to do a rock magazine,
however I think I would prefer to create a
magazine that allows different areas of music to
be established. I think that an indie-alternative
rock style of magazine would be better for my
audience as NME focuses on upcoming bands
and new music, and I think that modern music
is demonstrating a focus in a new segment of
rock, which is alternative. I think that this would
also differentiate my magazine and would allow
me to access a bigger target audience that
enjoys music that isn’t pop or rap. I also think
that these results indicate the design of
magazine and I find it interesting how both of
the magazine’s design and layout are so
different. Kerrang! is a lot more busy on the
cover page whilst NME seems to be neater and
more diverse. I think that the combination of
neatness and drama could be established
through font style and imagery. I think that this
would be interesting to see when designing my
magazine the turn out depending on the look of
the magazine, and whether it would apply to
my audience.
I thought that it would be interesting to see
what colours people are more drawn to and
what establishes a connection between the
music genre and magazine presentation.
Answers include colours such as red and black
seem to be more related to a rock magazine
style, however I have decided to focus on the
idea of indie-rock and so the answer may be
different if I re-worded the question. This gives
me an insight to what would be more attractive
and more related to the rock magazine style
which I can still use in my magazine as it is part
of the same theme, however I think that
colours like purple and pink which have a 9%
response in comparison to the rest of other
colours indicates that these may be possible
colours. I think that these colours would seem
more related to my genre of magazine along
with black and red, so therefore I think I should
experiment with colours to see what really
works with my magazine. I may ask my
audience, after an initial magazine draft, to see
whether these colours relate to indie-
alternative rock, and see what I could change
or keep to maintain this style.
From these results, the most common answers were around £3-£4
which I think is a reasonable price. I want my magazine to be
affordable within its first distribution so that it would appeal to a
greater audience. I think that £4 would be a better price because I
want to be able to include good content like interviews with popular
artists and festival tickets. Therefore I think that £4 price range would
be ideal for both the customer who wants to buy the media product
but also what the magazine has to offer, as well as the layout and
design.
Popular features that I found out were about
upcoming festivals and music events as well as
interviews with artists. I think that my results show
that there is a fairly varied answer and makes me
think about including a small bit of everything in my
magazine. I think that I will focus on interviews and
upcoming events because that seems to include
more interest, and it would allow me to have
magazine content which is relevant to today’s music
industry. I think that this has helped me a lot to
figure out what features to include that I could use
on my front page to establish a varied content in the
magazine, but also in my flat plans and content
pages. I think that focusing more on the areas about
artists and upcoming events seem more interesting
to read about and would allow me to engage my
target audience better, as this is what they would
prefer to see within a music magazine of this theme
and style.
These results allowed me to see how often
my audience would buy a magazine. 73%
of people said that they would buy a music
magazine monthly and therefore this
makes me think back to the content and
features within my magazine. Having a
monthly distribution of magazines would
be a lot easier to include a large and
diverse range of content, but it would also
allow me to include more relevant
information about events that have
happened or will happen. This would
balance my magazine production out as I
would not be stuck thinking about content
to produce every other week.
After deciding about my style and theme
of magazine, and changing it to more of an
indie-alternative rock themed magazine, I
worded this question so that I would be
able to establish differences between
contemporary bands to bands that actually
are relevant to this music genre. There is a
large focus towards Arctic Monkeys,
Twenty One Pilots, Nirvana and Green Day.
I purposely mentioned bands such as Black
Sabbath to see if my audience would be
able to establish a difference in the rock
genre. I think relevant artists in today’s
industry like Arctic Monkeys and Twenty
One Pilots show me that these are the
types of bands people look for when
looking at this genre of music. I think that
this helps me to look for bands which
include similar sounds, that will help me to
establish my magazine’s content - such as
interviews with upcoming artists so that
they are relevant to this magazine and the
genre of music.
There seems to be of a focus for upcoming artists in comparison to
reading about current artists. I think that this is interesting and would
allow me to think about artists that aren’t really secured in the music
industry. It would also allow me to diversify my content by talking
about new artists in every monthly issue which would be beneficial
for the target audience and bands for new interests. I think that this
would be much better in the production of my magazine and allow
me to include more relevancy about today’s music than current
artists which may seem boring to read about. This would then
diversify my magazine by talking about new artists, which would be
more interesting for my audience to read and look forward to. This
links in with magazines like Q who look for new artists most of the
time in their magazine.
This final question made me think about the
layout of my magazine’s front cover. The front
cover is an important aspect which grasps the
attention of many readers if it is good. From my
results, it is clear to see that most people find
the main image appealing in comparison to lots
of features and interviews as cover lines. I want
to put a lot of detail in to my front cover that
really draws attention and influences the way
people see my magazine. I think that this will be
a big advantage and grasp readers of my target
audience if I used the right colours, model and
clothing. Mise-en-scene will be a big factor that
will influence how my magazine will turn out,
and it will also show how well my magazine is
truly representative of the genre. This therefore
will be my main focus when designing.
Conclusion
After looking at my survey results, I think that is clear what will give my magazine
advantages and what I need to do in order to achieve that correct focus in music genre and
target audience.
My magazine needs to be directed towards a group of people between the ages of 18-24,
and therefore a mature style including colours (red, blacks, purples, pinks), neatness of
positioning cover line elements, what to put on the cover and including the correct content
to draw in my target audience. This survey has allowed me to think about what is relevant
in today’s music industry’s development within the indie-alternative rock sector and so it
will help me include relevant content about bands and upcoming events.
I think that designing my magazine will be a challenge in order to adhere to all these
different things, however I want to be able to create a magazine that has the visual appeal
and good content in order to draw in my target audience. This will make my magazine
production easier to do because I know what my audience wants in all my magazine
elements (cover, contents and double page spread).
Therefore this survey will help me a lot in my magazine development and it will enable me
to refer back to this information so that my magazine does appeal to the correct audience
and include the relevant information.
