George Orwell's novel Animal Farm is a satire of the Russian Revolution. It depicts the rebellion of farm animals against their human farmer, inspired by Marxist and socialist ideals. Over time, the pigs who have taken leadership roles end up exploiting the other animals and establishing a new authoritarian regime, betraying the principles of the rebellion. The characters and events in the novel map directly to figures and developments in the Russian Revolution and the rise of Stalin's totalitarian rule in the Soviet Union. The farm eventually evolves to resemble the capitalist society it sought to overthrow.
