This document summarizes research on modeling the low velocity impact behavior of fiberglass reinforced laminate composites using finite element analysis. Finite element models were created using ANSYS/LS-DYNA software to simulate drop tower impact tests and characterize the damage induced in laminates. Both shell and solid elements were used to model laminate targets and a spherical impactor. Results from the models were able to reasonably predict impact forces and energies compared to experimental testing. The models provide an initial understanding of the stresses and strains in laminates under different impact conditions.
