The Battle of Charleston involved multiple engagements between British forces attempting to take control of Charleston, and local patriot militias defending the city. The British were initially unsuccessful in their first attack on Fort Moultrie due to the fort's construction from palmetto logs. Later, the British were able to blockade Charleston harbor and force a patriot surrender after cutting off supply lines. In response, local militia leaders like Francis Marion, Thomas Sumter, and Andrew Pickens used guerrilla tactics to harass British forces in the countryside.
