World-class health care, close to home. We have an extraordinary opportunity to bring this standard of
healthcare excellence to Everett and Snohomish County. What’s more, we are close to achieving it!
Providence Regional Medical Center has made enormous strides in just a few short years. In June 2011, with
unprecedented donor support, Providence opened the state-of-the-art, 12-story, 680,000-square-foot Cymbaluk Medical
Tower. It is the first significant step in the medical center’s transformation to a 21st century healthcare facility – and one
that will enable Providence to keep pace with advances in medicine, the
growth of our community and the needs of our most vulnerable citizens.
There is, however, more to be done. If we are to fully realize our vision
to be one of the most advanced healthcare institutions in the Pacific
Northwest, Providence must take additional steps to upgrade existing
facilities, expand technology and enhance program quality. This, together
with the work that has already been completed, will greatly benefit our
families, neighbors and friends, and ensure that the highest quality medical
care is available, right here, for decades to come.
The Campaign for Providence is a historic, $25 million fundraising effort to support the important needs of Providence
Regional Medical Center. Its success to date has enabled us to achieve so much—including critical funding for the new
medical tower. But we are not finished. The second and final phase of the campaign will help provide the financial
resources necessary to complete our vision and further raise the threshold for medical excellence in our region.

Providence Regional serves five counties that are
undergoing intense growth and rapid change.
The proportion of older residents, in particular, is
growing at a fast pace, placing increased
demands on the healthcare system.
At the same time, Providence Regional must
adapt to the many rapid changes and economic
realities of healthcare delivery and advancing
technology.
The medical center has made great strides in
addressing these challenges. The centerpiece of
this historic effort is the new, world-class
Cymbaluk Medical Tower, opened in June 2011.
The Tower marks a substantial leap forward,
advancing Providence from a 20th to a 21st
century medical facility. Modern expansion, with
a focus on technology and program excellence, is
the solution needed to keep the medical center
on the leading edge for decades to come.
To complement the new Tower’s standard of
excellence, many original hospital facilities, which
served the community well for so many years
but no longer fully meet its needs, are being
substantially modernized and upgraded. When
these upgrades are complete, Providence
Regional’s Colby Campus will be one of the
most advanced facilities in the western United
States, and a cohesive, world-class center for
healthcare excellence for the region.

the facility—from the architectural design to
the innovative ways patients are cared for—
has been inspired by the legacy of excellence
for which Providence is known.
This achievement required incredible
commitment and investment on the part of
many people and organizations, from all
walks of life, from every corner of this region.

Family & Patient Centered Rooms and Amenities
A philosophy called “Patient and Family Centered Care” is the cornerstone of the patient
care experience at Providence Regional, and the Cymbaluk Medical Tower was built
around this innovative concept.
For people with medical conditions requiring an overnight stay, the Tower’s Acute Care
unit offers comfort and clinical excellence to patients and their families. With 144 patient
rooms, the Acute Care department encompasses four floors of the Tower. These floors
are organized into different specialty-care units, including cardiac telemetry, medical
telemetry, neuro-telemetry, stroke, neurosurgery, orthopedics and general surgery.
Spacious, mostly private rooms are designed to meet the needs of patients, family
members and medical professionals.
State-of-the-Art Diagnostic Imaging Center
Whether patients are hospitalized in the Tower as inpatients, or visit the
facility for routine imaging appointments, they have access to some of the
most advanced digital imaging technology on the market today—including
the world’s first high-definition, ultra-low-dose CT scanner. In fact, $20
million has been invested in the Tower’s imaging equipment alone.
In addition to its advanced equipment, the Phil and Kelly Johnson
Diagnostic Imaging Center has been designed for patients’ convenience,
comfort and privacy.
Imaging equipment is now also located right in Emergency Services. As a
result, patients who require an X-ray or CT scan no longer need to move
to another location for their exam.

Leading-Edge Surgical & Interventional Services
The Tower features a state-of-the-art Surgical & Interventional Services unit that ushers
in an entirely new age of surgical capability and innovation. Four previously separate
clinical units—Surgery, Interventional Radiology, Cardiac Catheterization Labs and
Electrophysiology Labs—are located together in the Tower’s surgical suites.
Rooms contain digital audio-visual equipment, so physicians can easily view their
patient’s digital information, including scans, images, reports, data and more, via
screens on the wall.
In addition, the department is designed for patient and family privacy, with private
pre- and post-op rooms that have space for two family members, and sliding glass
doors for added privacy.
A New Emergency Department
An entire floor in the Tower—a space larger than an NFL football field—
is devoted to Emergency Services. This department has 79 large, private
treatment rooms and 60,000 square feet of space, all designed to help
staff treat patients quickly, with minimal, if any, waiting time, and to
keep patients and family members comfortable during their visit.
Emergency Services includes dedicated treatment rooms for triage, major
emergencies, secure holding and trauma cases. And thanks to its covered
patient drop-off area and entrance, a dedicated ambulance entrance and
rooftop helicopter pad, getting to Emergency Services is quick and easy
at a time when every second counts.

There are times when a life hangs on a string; when a series of
unpredictable events determines an outcome of life or death. In these
moments, the value of superior medicine becomes crystal clear.
On October 24, 2011, at Snohomish High School, 14-year-old April Lutz
was stabbed in the heart by a fellow student with a knife. What followed
was nothing short of amazing, as a team of medical professionals’ priceless
skill saved a life in jeopardy.
After April arrived at Providence Regional Medical Center that day, a team
of six physicians, including Drs. Bill Finley, Joseph Austin and Kimberly
Costas, along with the entire trauma staff on duty, were called into action
to treat April’s 13 stab wounds. The most severe wound was just four
millimeters short of severing a main artery. April’s heart stopped three
times before the trauma team could stabilize her.
On this day, it could have gone either way—but thankfully, April lived. And
almost a half year later, her wounds have healed and April’s life is starting
to return back to that of a normal, healthy teenager.
Advanced Capability Saves Lives
With the opening of the Cymbaluk Medical Tower, Snohomish County
gained one of the most advanced emergency care facilities in the western
United States.
Along with the Providence trauma team’s expertise and speed, the
technology and equipment in the Tower’s new Emergency Department
saves lives—like April’s—every single day.
This level of clinical excellence is not available in every community. In those
moments when an accident, sudden or severe illness, or senseless attack
invade an ordinary life, world-class health care close to home can tip the
scales toward survival.

Designed for today, but with tomorrow in mind, the Cymbaluk
Medical Tower includes space reserved specifically for future
needs. As patient volumes and technology evolve, the Tower’s interior
spaces can be adapted for inevitable growth and change.
Surgical Capacity
Surgery is one of the most rapidly advancing fields in medicine, and it is
difficult to foresee the exact shape that operating suites and advancing
technology will take—even in the next decade.
The 17 operating and procedural suites on the Tower’s interventional
and surgical services floors were designed to be significantly larger than
average to accommodate today’s advanced equipment and to be
flexible enough to add future technology as it becomes available. This
department also has space to expand from 17 to up to 28 operating
suites as the community—and demand for services—grows.

Room for More Inpatient Stays
Floors 5 and 9 of the Cymbaluk Medical Tower were
“shelled” and left unfinished, earmarked as acute patient
care rooms reserved for future expansion. A number of
inpatient units remain today in existing hospital buildings
elsewhere on the campus; many of these will move into
the Tower eventually. The floors will open to serve the
community as the region’s population grows and the
need arises.
The entire floors five and nine of the Tower are currently unconstructed space but will become
finished patient rooms when extra capacity is needed to care for our growing region.

Creating a Campus
of
Care
Since a medical center’s campus is home to a
wide and diverse range of specialty services,
careful physical planning is imperative. Patients,
who may be ill or injured when they visit the
campus, must be able to access all the services
they need quickly and conveniently in a seamless
continuum of care.
In addition, clinical disciplines must be located in
close proximity allowing medical professionals
and staff to work together in an integrated
approach to delivering the very best course of
treatment for each patient.

Building a Bridge
Anew sky bridge spanning 13th Street links
the Cymbaluk Medical Tower, original
hospital, and the 1717 Building, which houses
the Providence Regional Cancer Partnership
and the Cranial, Spine and Joint Clinic.
This sky bridge serves a critical role in
connecting various centers of care on campus.
Patients and staff will be able to move quickly
and easily from one corner of the campus to
another, without being exposed to the
weather or having to cross a busy street.
Renewing Earlier Spaces
The Cymbaluk Medical Tower will remain a
world-class, leading-edge facility for
decades—thanks to a design that built in
flexibility for growth and technological
advancements. However, a number of clinical
units on the campus are located in existing
buildings that require major upgrades. These
units will be renovated to bring them to a
state-of-the-art level that complements the
campus’ newer facilities.
Among the units that have been or will soon
be upgraded are:

On any given day on the Providence Regional
campus, thousands of people gather to receive
health services, work, visit friends and family, and
conduct other daily activities. At the heart of the
campus, Providence Regional has constructed a
unique and welcoming public concourse removed
from the patient care areas, where everyone is
welcome to meet, take a break and find access to
services they need during their day.
Where the former Emergency Department was once
located, a contemporary new concourse takes its
place, serving as the central hub of the campus.
Spacious and contemporary in style, the concourse
offers a variety of modern amenities and retail services
for patients, visitors and staff alike.
A modern café provides a diverse menu with stations
that include world cuisine, home-cooked favorites,
and a range of other options. The comfortable and
inviting dining area doubles the former cafeteria's
seating capacity.
Appropriately located in the heart of the new
concourse is a spacious new chapel, named
Providence Ascension Chapel, offering a peaceful
place of healing and reflection for patients, staff and
visitors. It provides space for religious services and has
several unique features, including a stained-glass
window preserved from the original chapel at
Providence Hospital in Seattle, and an altar,
tabernacle, lectern and holy-water font handcrafted
by a local artist.
The newly expanded gift shop, located adjacent to
the café, is almost twice the size of the former shop. It
has easy access and feature expanded merchandise for
patients, families and friends.
The concourse features a new full-service, retail
pharmacy that offers convenience and easy access to
patients and their families who require prescription or
over-the-counter medication.

Advancing
Heart & Vascular Institute
Providence Regional’s Heart & Vascular Institute offers one of the largest and most advanced
cardiovascular care programs in Washington State, performing more than 5,000 diagnostic and
interventional procedures annually. At the core of the Institute’s success are its nationally recognized
physicians, including cardiologists, cardiac and vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists, as
well as its innovative clinical programs and its leading-edge facilities, technology and equipment.
To meet the program’s rapid growth and better serve the community, Providence Regional is
partnering with the Everett Clinic, community referral hospitals, and experts from Providence Health
& Services to streamline patient care and ensure cutting-edge therapy. These collaborations include
a rapid response program for patients having a heart attack. Additionally, our cardiac surgeons
routinely collaborate with a network of other West Coast surgeons to review clinical results and
discuss new approaches to ensure the highest level of care for our patients. Through an innovative
partnership with Radia, Providence offers a state-of-the-art Wound Health Center so that patients
with peripheral vascular disease and chronic wounds can receive care in one integrated location.
Thanks to the new Tower’s state-of-the-art facilities, equipment and technology, and the
commitment of physicians and other clinicians who bring extraordinary talent and expertise
to the community, Providence has been able to advance a number of clinical programs to a level
unsurpassed in this region.

Providence Regional Cancer Partnership
The Providence Regional Cancer Partnership was created in 2007 through a historic
collaboration of four leading medical groups—Providence Regional, The Everett
Clinic, Western Washington Medical Group and Northwest Washington Radiation
Oncology Associates.
The Partnership is located in a state-of-the-art facility offering patients all aspects of
outpatient cancer care under one roof. It has also brought to the community some
of the most sought-after cancer technology available in the region. With the
opening of the Tower, cancer care has been further advanced with a refurbished
and upgraded inpatient Oncology Unit located on the 3rd floor of Providence
Regional’s A Wing. A sky bridge connects the 1717 Building to the facilities of the
main hospital, including the inpatient Oncology Unit, Diagnostic Imaging Center,
Surgery Suites and other critical services and facilities.
Neurosciences and Spine Institute
Providence Regional’s Neurosciences and Spine Institute provides a comprehensive
array of leading-edge diagnostic and treatment resources for conditions affecting
the brain, spine and nervous system. The Institute’s centerpiece programs are the
Stroke Center and an innovative Neuro-Hospitalist Program. As the most advanced
center of its kind in the North Puget Sound region, and serving as the referral
center of choice for Northwest Washington, the Institute brings together the
expertise and talents of more than 60 clinicians specializing in these fields.
As part of an exciting initiative to advance the Institute to a world-class level,
Providence Regional has brought together leading neuro and orthopedic surgeons
from around the globe, including two fellowship-trained neurosurgeons, to create
a new Cranial, Spine and Joint Clinic. The new clinic will diagnose and treat head,
spine, nervous system, hip and joint conditions in a new 6,300-square-foot clinical
facility located in the 1717 Building on Providence’s Colby Campus.

On December 29, 2010, Jenae Goldfinch was on duty on the 2nd
floor of the unfinished Cymbaluk Medical Tower. A project
engineer for Mortenson Construction, Jenae had gone into work that
morning anticipating a routine but busy day, as she and her team helped
keep construction of the Tower on schedule for its June 2011 opening.
As it turned out, her workday would be anything but routine. Jenae had
a stroke that day, at age 23.
When Every Minute Counts
Jenae was fortunate to have been on site at the Providence Regional
campus. She was swiftly transported next door to the Providence
Emergency Department and immediately given a CT scan and tissue
plasminogen activator (TPA), a potent clot-busting drug that can help
stroke victims recover more fully—if it is given quickly enough after the
onset of symptoms.
Jenae's care in the Providence Emergency Department may have saved
her life. It certainly minimized the damage to her brain. Just five weeks
after her stroke, Jenae was back on her job in the Tower, functioning
at 100 percent.
The Providence Connection
Jenae’s work on the Tower wasn’t her only connection to Providence;
she and her brother Joe represent the sixth generation of Providence
supporters in Everett. Their father Geoff and uncle Greg operate
Goldfinch Bros., a local glass company that has been a fixture in the
Everett business community since 1892. The company supplied the large
panels of glass for the first four floors of the Tower.
Aside from their business contributions, Geoff and his wife Carlene, and
Greg and his wife Nga, have devoted countless hours as volunteers in
support of the Providence mission. They also jointly donated $50,000 to
Phase I of the Campaign for Providence.
“We made this gift knowing we were supporting an important resource
in our community,” Geoff says. “We had no clue at the time that we
were actually investing in a service that provided our own daughter
with life-saving care.”

Health care is a community concern—it is a resource used by all residents at
some time in their lives. Transforming health care in our region will take
support from all corners, and from all walks of life, from across the expansive
region that Providence Regional serves.
The transformation to world-class health care in our community, now in its home
stretch, presents an opportunity for all residents to come together for a common
purpose: to ensure medical excellence in our region for decades to come.
A Vision Fulfilled…in Phases
The total cost of Providence Regional Medical Center’s campus transformation—
including the new Cymbaluk Medical Tower and the renovation and upgrade of
other hospital facilities—is $500 million.
Demonstrating a clear commitment to Everett and Snohomish County, Providence
Regional is providing $475 million—a substantial portion of this total cost. The
Campaign for Providence seeks to raise the remaining, but especially critical balance
of this total—$25 million.
More than 70 community leaders, business owners, physicians and compassionate
friends of Providence have come forward to serve on the Steering Committee for
Phase I of the Campaign for Providence, the largest fund-raising effort ever
undertaken in our community. The Steering Committee’s leadership and the
generous support of so many has enabled the Campaign for Providence to surpass
its Phase I goal of $15 million.
Now, Providence General Foundation is working to engage the broader community
in Phase II of this effort, which will enable Providence to both achieve our historic
fund-raising goal of $25 million and invest further in the health care of our citizens.
