JUNO (2008)
Reception Theory (Stuart Hall):
I have a negotiated view on Juno, as I do agree with some decisions she makes and also sympathise
with her and accept that it would be a really hard time in a teenagers life, but at the same time I
don’t agree with most of what she does and how she acts in general, as its childish and coul d all be
handled in a mature and almost hidden way. I also think that the way she acts with the couple is
overstepping the boundaries and just common manners are lost. These views will change depending
on the social class and the way you were brought up, as some people will see it as t normal thing to
do and within the boundaries and some will think not just the way she acted but the actual act of
‘making love’ at her age etc. Is wrong, and all depends if that’s because of how they were brought up
or maybe if they’ve gone through a situation like that in their lives and don’t agree with the choices
she made because maybe the made the same choices and I didn’t work out well so negative
thoughts connecting with the situation then reflect their view of the film itself.
Although I have mixed views on the way she acts in the film I think it i s quite a feel good movie and
when she does act the way she does it is funny and light hearted. Some moments in the film make
me feel a little uncomfortable and
sometimes too cringe for my liking. I
quite like the quirkiness and
awkwardness of the main
characters as it’s funny to see how
they deal with the situation with a
comical side, as in real life most
people wouldn’t deal with it this
way. I like the way the film makes
you think of how you would deal
with the situation if it happened to
you, but also isn’t too serious about
it.
The film captures different sides of the pregnancy, with a couple about to adopt the baby. They
show the emotional effects it has on both parties and not just the struggle of the teenage pregnancy,
but the problems that happen with the couple adopting. In conclusion everything is done for the
best of the baby, and everyone is content in their place in the baby’s life, in it, or not. It does turn
out to be a classic happy ending which I think is very fitting for the film and does make o feel good
but the style of movie is just not the genre would usually pick out and just class the film as
something I would like on in the background.
It was submitted to the BBFC with a PG request. The key issues of them giving it a PG rating is the
strong language, moderate sex references, and brief sight of a gory scene from an old horror movie
The Wizard of Gore, rated 18. So looking into these issues with a younger audience may be revealing
too much adult content, so to give it a PG wouldn’t be acceptable.
Sex references are fairly frequent in Juno but they are moderate in strength, most of them are said
light-heartedly with a comical intent so wouldn’t expose younger people to completely adult
language. The sex references were also considered to ‘reflect what is likely to be familiar to most
adolescents’ not educational in a strict sense but gives an insight to maybe even the adults about
teens and their struggles and how they deal with them. At the very start of the film we see a pair of
knickers fall to the floor when Juno and Paulie are about to have sex which is the only ‘sex scene’ in
the movie, but the act itself is only implied, which was allowed by BBFC Guidelines at 12A.
Fight Club
The Hypodermic Model:
My view on Fight club is a negotiable although I really like the film and script which does make you
want to become more like the characters; I wouldn’t actually do or agree with most of the acts in the
film. Allot of people depending on their social class would be appalled by the acts and the way they
view life, as its completely unconventional to the way of life and social groups of people.
The producers of the film originally wanted it to be rated a 15, While BBFC examiners found the film
stylish and challenging, some felt an 18 was acceptable due to the strong scenes of violence and sex
scenes. There were concerns under the BBFC Guidelines about the glamorisation of violence and
‘cult’ like groups, which could potentially encourage interests in organised bare-fist fighting, so the
request for a 15 was denied.
There was much debate about the film's subject matter; it was seen as a show of capitalism and
consumerism. The film shows scenes in which men are challenged against other men to beat each
other up without any resistance and in the end has a feeling of relief, the result being scenes of
strong, and mostly bloody, violence. This became a group of people soon growing throughout the
country almost like a cult, which worried certain people such as Alexander Walker who referred to it
as following the route of Nazism… “My verdict on Fight Club is already in: it is an inadmissible assault
on personal decency. And on society itself. At its Venice Film Festival world premiere in September,
it caused well-justified outrage as a movie phenomenon well in line with the current tentative but
threatening revival of Nazism. In particular, it alarmed my Jewish film critic friends.”
The hypodermic model can be seen to
be applied here, as such people like
alexander walker would say it influences
cult like and violet behaviour in society
as we know it, and if you watch this film
you WILL step out of conformity and
create a life based on the film and the
acts in which they are doing in this film.
Allot of people may agree and say that it
reacts on the psychological behaviour
therefore crimes and violence
committed in real life are stemmed from
or linked to the visual media they have
used or watched. (videogames, movies,
TV etc.)
His view on the film is extremely strong
and not the opinion of most. The film
obviously has scenes and acts not of normal nature to our society, but most if not all of the audience
can differentiate between what is acceptable in real life and in a movie. So I think the view of most
people would simply be just appreciating the message behind the violence instead of just the
violence itself.
USES AND GRATIFICATIONS
A film like fight club can divert a person from the struggles that they are having in their own life and
take them to a different place in their mind or even change the way they see life, act and think. I
think that a film can change the way you think in a slight and not damaging way, as in one wouldn’t
carry out the acts in the film but they have realised things they probably didn’t realise before about
life and sometimes can change out for the better and make you more confident in yourself and
when talking to people. For example, Tyler Oakley the main character in the film, has a very overly
confident view on life and women and relationships; this could change someone to wanting to be
more like him and therefore becoming more confident and helping build their relationships with
people in their life.
This film can make one look over their life and create juxtaposition with life itself and life in the film.
This may make them think about how they would deal with life in the characters position and how it
would be different if they were in these same situations, and al so think about the struggles they
have I their own life and how serious they are or miniscule compared the encounters they have to
deal with in the film.
This goes against the hypodermic model as it shows we actually think about the acts and things
happening in the film in detail, and connect them with our life in a minute and in depth thought
proses, rather than simply accepting the messages within the film and applying the whole basis of
the film around our lives.
