History of Children In Need
Children In Need started with a short
broadcast on Christmas Day 1927. The
response of the telethon was brilliant and
raised £1,143.
The first ever television broadcast was in
1955 Children’s Christmas hour appeal
presented by Sooty and Harry Corbett.
The television and radio broadcast at
Christmas ran up to 1979 raising a total of
£625,836
Children In Need appeals
In 1978, Terry Wogan made his first
apperance as a Children In Need presenter.
In 1980 the appeal was broadcast on BBC
One in a new telethon format, hosted by
Terry with Sue Lawley and Esther Rantzen. It
captured the public's imagination to such
an extent that the donations increased
dramatically and broke the million mark for
the very first time

After the first live main appeal in 1980,
Children In Need was born.
Terry Wogan has been the main presenter
ever since it started but he has been
joined by a line up of presenters called
Andi Peters, Fearne Cotton, Joanna
Lumley, Gaby Rosalind and Natasha
Kaplinsky.
Where did the name of the bear
Pusdey come from?
Pudsey was designed by Joanna Ball, a
BBC graphics designer, who named him
after the West Yorkshire town where she
was born.
Children In Need 13 acts
This year’s offical Children In Need single
was made by Ellie Goulding by singing
How Do You love Me.
JLS and MCFLY did battle of the boybands
One Direction singing
The Cast of Matillda and many others
Eastenders dancing and new studio from
Elstree
Children In Need Rocks
In 2009, Gary Barlow decided to raise a
concert in Children In Need by having
many different acts singing live on BBC.
The events have come from London
Hammersmith Arena, The Royal Albert
Hall and many others.
This has been a great concert for people
to watch and enjoy on the BBC.
