Melamine, an industrial chemical, was added to milk powder in China to increase the protein content and mislead tests. This was done to increase profits. In 2007, pets in the US started dying from kidney failure caused by melamine in pet food from China. In 2008, Chinese infants began experiencing kidney stones and being hospitalized for kidney issues caused by melamine in milk powder. Melamine remains in the kidneys and forms stones that block tubes and cause swelling, requiring surgery or lifelong dialysis. Over 13,000 Chinese infants have been hospitalized due to melamine poisoning from milk powder. Foods containing dairy from affected companies should be avoided.
