• Holding tools
Hand tools for woodwork
Classification
MEASURING TOOLS
PUSH-PULL TAPE
• Used to measure longer
distances available from
one meter to 50 meters
long.
- Refer to tools that measure things
like distances, angles. To take precise
measurements when working on
woodworking projects
FOLDING EXTENTION RULE
• used for measuring
inside distances such as
cabinets,doors, windows
BENCH RULE
• Used to attach them
permanently to a bench,
or similar work surface.
TWO FOOT FOUR
FOLDING RULE
• Used in measuring
short distances.
ZIGZAG RULE
• Available in 4 ft and
6 ft long commonly
used by carpenters
for rough.
SLIDE CALIPER RULE
• A special tool used
to measure outside
diameter of
cylindrical objects.
MARKING TOOLS
• Used for marking a
very rough work.
- Used for marking on the
parts of the wood to be cut.
CHALK LINE AND REEL
DIVIDER
• Used in dividing distances into
equal parts such as arcs and
circumstance including straight
lines.
MARKING GAUGE
• Used for marking lines
parallel to the edge or end
piece of wood.
SCRATCH AWL
• Used for marking and for
punching the location of
holes to be drilled.
SCRIBER
• Designed for marking wood by
scratching the surface visibly.
SETTING AND MARKING
OUT TOOLS
• Used to mark lines
that form a right
angle .
- Used for measuring straight
lines and setting out work.
TRY-SQUARE SLIDING BEVEL
• Used for duplicating
angles and for
setting out bevels.
MITRE SQUARE
• Also used to
mark angles,
particularly
45 degree.
COMPASS
• Used to mark
the arcs of a
circle.
CUTTING TOOLS - Tools for cutting wooden
materials needed for
construction.
1. Saw - Simple style of cutting tool to an advanced piece of powered machinery
a. Hand saw
b. Power saw
HAND SAW – type of saws that are powered by the force of the user, rather than
being powered by electricity , battery or gas.
Type of Saw
TYPES OF HAND SAW:
CROSSCUT SAW
• Used to cut across
the grain of the
wood
COPING SAW
• Used for
making curved
cuts on wood
RIP CUT SAW
• Is designed to cut wood
parallel to the grain
BACK SAW
• A thin crosscut saw with five
teeth, with a blade stiffened by
a thick back
• POWER SAWS – are saws that are powered by rechargeable
batteries, electricity or gas motor to make cuts.
TYPES OF POWER SAW:
CIRCULAR SAW
• To cut through various
materials,including
stone, metal and wood.
MITER SAW
• Designed for making
precise angled cuts,
notable for miter joints.
TABLE SAW
• For making exact
straight cuts
SHAPING TOOLS - Used to cut in curves, different
angles and many other shapes.
• PLANE
• FILE
• CHISEL
Types of
shaping tools
PLANE
- Used for general
smoothing of the edges,
sizing of timber but
only making it smaller
to correct size –wood
edge jointing.
- Used for removing rough surfaces on wood and for
reducing it to size.
TYPES OF PLANE:
BENCH PLANE
FORE PLANE
- Its length enables
it to skim off high
spots as it bridges
low spots,
JOINTER PLANE
- Known as try plane
or trying plane,
designed for planning
long edges of boards
in the process.
JOINTER PLANE
- Removing very fine
shavings to leave a
smooth finish.
FILE - Used for smoothening and sharpening other tools and for
finishing wood.
TYPES OF FILE:
FLAT FILE
- Designed in
slightly different
way by tapering
both the width and
thickness of the file.
HALF-ROUND FILE
- Maintaining an
even thickness,
width, or both
over their length.
ROUND FILE
-For smoothing
inside holes and
circular grooves.
SQUARE FILE
-Filing in a
rectangular ,
square groove .
CHISEL
- Used to shave wood in recessed areas, available in widths
ranging from 1/8 to 2 inches.
FIRMER CHISEL
- Had square edges
and hardwood
handles and were
used for heavy-duty
woodworking task.
BENCH CHISEL
- The general-
purpose chisel,
usually have cutting
edge angled
between 25 and 30
degrees.
DOVETAIL CHISEL
- Have a long thin
blade with bevelled
edges and a honed
cutting edge of
between 20 and 30
degrees.
FRAMING CHISEL
- Used in boat
building and
timber framing
application.
DRIVING TOOLS - Used for driving in or driving out
nails and other objects into the wood.
HAMMER
- Used to apply
force to nails to
drive them into
place.
MALLET
- To knock wooden
pieces together, or
to drive dowels,
chisels and to apply
pressure on joints.
SCREWDRIVER
- Used for
insertion and
removal of
screws.
PUNCH
- Used to drive fastener
such as nails and dowels,
making a hole or forming
an indentation of the tip
on a workpiece.
BORING TOOLS - Used for making or drilling holes on
the piece of wood.
BIT BRACE
- Consisting of a crank-
shaped turning device,
that grips and rotates the
hole-cutting tool, the bit.
- for boring hole
with drill bit not
more than ¼ inch
in a diameter..
HAND DRILL PUSH DRILL
- Used for rapidly
drilling holes
BRADAWL
- For making
small holes in
wood for screws
and nails.
HOLDING TOOLS - Used to hold the wood piece
together on the workbench.
HORSE OR
TRESTLE
- Used to sustain or
support the working
operation such as sawing,
chiseling and planning.
CLAMP
- Used in tightly pressing
piece of wood or metal
together in making tenon,
mortise and other joints.
VISE
- A table tool used to hold
a piece of material rigidly
secured in a place to
absorb severe blows.
