  • #14 http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/04/12/new-collaborative-google-docs-unveiled/?partner=rss&emc=rssGoogle is continuing its assault on Microsoft’s dominance of the multibillion dollar market for productivity software. On Monday, Google is unveiling new versions of Google Docs, which includes document, spreadsheet and presentation editors, all on the Web, offered free to consumers or for an annual price of $50 per user for businesses.Google first released these productivity apps in 2006 and then, as now, the focus was squarely on real-time collaboration. In the new document editing apps, up to 50 people can work on the same document at the same time, literally conducting letter-by-letter tug-of-wars over individual words. The new editing apps are faster and more responsive than earlier versions, it’s easier to import different kinds of files to the cloud and images can be easily shifted around within pages, a feature that was missing before.Since the new versions don’t have all the features of the originals, like auto-translation, Google will offer them as a preview option for a few months, while keeping the old versions. Also, Google says that come May and for the foreseeable future, users will no longer be able to work with Google Docs offline, which is a considerable shortcoming that could leave some business users disappointed.Microsoft’s Office 2010, coming this spring, will have its own collaboration and cloud features, of course, so this will continue to be an uphill battle for Google.Melissa Webster, an analyst at IDC, said Microsoft’s productivity software tools are years ahead in terms of overall features, but that Google has focused on pushing the ball forward in the particular area of real-time co-authoring of documents. “That’s a small percentage of total usage,” she said. “But it’s kind of one of those high-value features that, when you need it, you need it.”This is an area where Google appears determined to undercut one of Microsoft’s key strategic strengths. Last month, Google acquired Docverse, a company focused on creating collaborative tools within Microsoft Office.Major Update for Google Docsvia Google Operating System by Alex Chitu on 4/12/10Google Docs has been constantly updated since 2006, Writely and Google Spreadsheets have merged, but adding new features became increasingly difficult. Now that browsers are much better than they were four years ago and cutting-edge apps like Google Wave can run in a browser, it was time for a new beginning."We decided to rebuild the underlying infrastructure of Docs to give us greater flexibility, improved performance and a better platform for developing new features quickly. Today, we're pleased to announce preview versions of the new Google document and spreadsheet editors and a new standalone drawings editor, all built with an even greater focus on speed and collaboration," says Jonathan Rochelle. The new versions of the Google Docs will be rolled out in the coming days and you'll be able to try them when you see a message at the top of the page: "New version".Besides using a new infrastructure, the document editor and the spreadsheet editor will add many new features. The document editor has real-time editing, sidebar chat, a new commenting system, better formatting and an improved importing feature. The spreadsheet editor brings back auto-complete, adds a formula bar for editing cells and you can now drag and drop columns. There's also an application for creating drawing collaboratively: Google Drawings. "The new standalone drawings editor lets you collaborate in real time on flow charts, designs, diagrams and other fun or business graphics. Copy these drawings into documents, spreadsheets and presentations using the web clipboard, or share and publish drawings just like other Google Docs."Google Enterprise Blog says that the offline mode will be transitioned from Google Gears to the native HTML5 implementation. "The new Google Docs editors will take advantage of faster rendering engines in modern browsers as well as new web standards like HTML5. As a result, we need to temporarily remove offline support for Docs starting May 3rd, 2010. We know that this is an important feature for some of you, and we are working hard to bring a new and improved HTML5-based offline option back to Google Docs."Google Docs really needed a major update, especially now when Microsoft Office's web apps are about to be launched.--------------------------The obvious has happened. Writely and Google Spreadsheets have merged and the new products is named, not Google Office, but Google Docs & Spreadsheets. The strange name will probably be modified, as Google Docs & Spreadsheets & Presentations is just not a catchy name. The good news for those who hated Writely's interface is that the unified interface is similar to Google Spreadsheets'.Also now you can let collaborators invite other people. "The people whom you've invited can now add other collaborators to that spreadsheet. You can decide whether you want this capability turned on for each spreadsheet individually - the default for new spreadsheets is to allow collaborators to add other collaborators."The next logical move would be to add a new web application for presentations and to integrate all these applications with Gmail, Google Calendar and Picasa Web, so they can share attachments, photos and documents. Some pieces of the puzzle are still missing, but Google can't deny they don't want to build Google Office.
  • #16 There’s no question that Google is setting its sights on taking some of Microsoft’s marketshare in the productivity suite space. Last year, Google announced a new plug-in that syncs Google’s enterprise versions of Apps, including Gmail, contacts, and calendar, with Microsoft’s Outlook. And Google just acquired Docverse, an application lets users collaborate directly on Microsoft Office documents. Today Google is taking another swipe at Microsoft with a new tool that makes it significantly easier to… http://techcrunch.com/2010/03/17/google-apps-microsoft-exchange/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+Techcrunch+(TechCrunch)
