THE SKY
1.- Where does the Sun go at night? Does the Sun disappear?
Observe: Look at the sky in the evening. Where does the Sun seem to
go?
2.- What does the Sun do?
The Sun is a star. Stars shine. Stars make their own light and heat. The
Sun is the closest star to Earth. The Sun is the only star you see during
the day.
The Sun gives Earth light and heat. The Sun´s light and heat warm the
ground, water, and air. Some parts of Earth warm faster than other parts.
You can measure how much the Sun warms things. Temperature is how
warm or cool something is.
3.-What can you observe about the Sun?
Morning.- In the morning, the Sun looks low in the sky. Earth spins. The Sun
seems to move higher in the sky. The Sun warms Earth.
Noon.- At noon, the Sun looks high in the sky. On most days, it is warmer at
noon than in the morning. In the afternoon, the Sun looks low in the sky.
Evening.- Earth continues to spin. The Sun looks very low in the sky. It gets
colder. Night begins. The Sun will rise again the next morning.
4.- What can you observe about the Moon?
We can see the Moon at night. Sometimes we can see the Moon during the
day. The Moon does not make its own light. The Sun lights the Moon.
The Moon moves around Earth. The Moon´s shape seems to change as it
moves. We see these changes every 28 days.
5.- What can you observe about the stars?
The stars shine at night. Stars make light and heat. Stars are far away.
You cannot feel heat from the stars. Groups of stars look like pictures in
the sky. Each picture is a constellation. Constellations can look like people,
animals, or things.
6.- What are the planets?
Earth is a planet. It moves in a circle around the Sun. Earth spins as it
moves. It takes 24 hours to spin around one time. That is one day and one
night.
There are other planets. Planets can be big or small. Some planets are close
to the Sun. Other planets are far away from the Sun. All planets move
around the Sun
INQUIRY SKILLS : THINK AND WRITE
. Can you always see the Sun during the day?
. What does the Sun do to the water?
. What does the Sun give Earth?
. Why do we have day and night?
. How does the Moon´s shape seem to change?
. Why can we see the Moon at night?
. You can see the Moon at night. Have you seen the Moon during the day?
. What is a constellation?
. What does the Big Dipper constellation look like?
. How are the planets similar?
. Does Earth stay in one place?
. How are the planets different?
. What would happen if Earth did not spin around?
MAKE A STAR PICTURE
You can see many star pictures in the night sky. You may see one that no
one else has seen before!
Draw a small picture on some foil. Poke tiny holes along the picture. Put the
foil on a paper tower roll. Look into it. What do you see? Try this!!
