 A text book is a prescribed book for 
the student of a particular age group. 
 Text book is called the teacher in 
print.

Oxford English dictionary says: “A 
book used as a standard work for 
the study of a particular subject, a 
manual of instructions in a subject 
of study “ 
L.J Lewis: “Text book is tool both for 
the pupil and the teacher”
Lagne: “It is a standard book for any 
particular branch of study” 
Bacon: “A book designed for 
classroom use, carefully prepared by 
experts in the field and equipped 
with the usual teaching devices”

Text books extend the habit of self study and 
activity among the students. 
Develop the thinking and reasoning in the minds of 
pupils. 
It chance to do get proper different view of the 
subject matter. 
It develop teaching efficiency in different areas.
To develop a good relationship between society 
and pupils. 
It expand the knowledge of many extent(areas). 
It make opportunity to refer other discipline. 
It develop way to new finding facts and 
approaches to research field.

CHARACTERISTIC OF TEXT BOOKS 
Textbook is a standard book in the subject. 
It is meant both for the teachers and the students. 
It is manual instruction. 
It is both content and technique. 
Textbook is used for formal as well as informal 
education.
It is a tool for realising the instructional objectives 
of the subject. 
Text book is the foundation on which the course is 
built up. 
It contain selected material. 
It presents material in graded from.
It is a principle source of study material for a given

It is a learning instrument used by the students. 
It i s a purity languages, simplicity of diagrams.

PURPOSE & IMPORTANT 
They determine not only the subject matter to 
be taught but also the methods of teaching. 
Text books are the only tools in the hands of 
teachers in Indian situations with which they 
are able to run their teaching programme 
smoothly.
Text books are good learning instruments for 
the students as they can revise their lessons 
whenever they want to do so. 
Text books are the chief vehicles for attaining 
the goals of curriculum. 
Text books fills the needs of the students. 
Text books should be promote moral values.
Text books give concrete from to the 
curriculum. scope of the any topic can be 
better know with the help of text books. 
They help the teacher in right planning of 
the yearly work. 
Text books should based on the 
characteristics of children. 
It towards the promotion of national goals 
like democracy, socialism, secularism and 
national integrations.
MERITS

To suggest activities. 
To keep the teachers and students on right track.

Too much dependence on text books 
gives temporary bookish knowledge. 
There is lack of direct experiences. The 
students acquire second knowledge. 
Lack of interest shown by the top 
ranking scholars. 
Carelessness and cheating done by the 
publishers.
