Kalpana Chawla was born in Karnal, India and became fascinated with flight after seeing India's first pilot J.R. Datt. She studied aeronautical engineering and received advanced degrees from universities in India and the United States. Chawla was selected by NASA for astronaut training and became the first Indian-American in space. During her first space mission on the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997, she orbited the Earth for over 16 days.
