DESERT TOURISM
IN INDIA
 Desert is an undulating sand plain covered with sand dunes.
 Deserts in India are mainly spread over the states of Rajasthan
and southern portion of Punjab , Haryana and Gujarat.
 Their history and never changing dynamics have
attracted many sightseers around the globe.
 World famous Thar Desert is spread over huge area of
more than 200,000 sq.km(77,000sq.mi) and being the 9th
largest tropical desert in the world, it is one of the most sought
after tourist place in India.
INTRODUCTION
LOCATED
 Indian Desert lies towards the western margins of Aravalli hills.
 Thar Desert is located in the northwestern part of the Indian
subcontinent t, to the west of Aravalli Range. It slopes to the
south into the Rann of Kachchh,Gujarat and to the west into
the Indus valley of Pakisthan.
CLIMATE
 Desert region receives very low rainfall below 150mm per
year, all falling in between July and September. Streams
appear during rainy season
 The climate is harsh with temperatures ranging from near
freezing up to 50ºC.
 The Thar desert has a Tropical dry climate. East of the Thar
desert, the region running from Punjab and Haryana to
Kathiawar experiences a Tropical and Sub Tropical steppe
climate.
PEOPLE
 The Indian Desert is mainly inhabited by Hindus,
Muslims and Sikhs.
 A colourful culture and rich tradition prevails in
desert.
 The people have a great passion for music and
poetry.
 The main occupation of people in the desert is
agriculture and animal husbandry.
 The living standard of people in the desert is low.

the north-western part of the
Indian subcontinent.

running along the border
between India and Pakisthan.

 Jaisalmer Desert Festival is an annual event organized by
the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation.
 Location is on Sam Sand Dunes 42 km from Jaisalmer.
 It is a colorful festival held in February every year.
 During the desert Festival , colorful folk culture of royal
Rajasthan can be seen.
 Camel races, Turban tying competitions, The snake
charmers, Folk performers, Puppeteers, Art and Crafts are
the major attraction of the festival.
