This is my mood board for my documentary. For my mood board I decided to use the images that would give the most impact and attract the person
viewing it. I also decided to make parts of the board symmetrical to imply the hippy/tribal/mythical theme. I wanted it to locate the island and set the
scene. I did this by over laying images and making them blend together so it looked like the island. I then added the fire pit, pheasant, dagger, bow and
arrow and the boy to introduce the audience to the characters but also give them a taster of what they will see in the mockumentary. In this case it’s the
hunting tools and the animal.
Development for Idea
Mock-up of Idea
In these images that I have taken, I have re-enacted some of the scenes that I would like to involve in my mockumentary.
In the first image we see Ross one of the campmates on the man-made rope swing. With the twins having the lower
hierarchy in the group they were made to try out the rope swing. Charlie being 2 minutes older than Ross meant Ross
had to try out the swing this inevitably goes wrong and results to Ross falling to the floor. Image 2 is to represent my long
takes of just general day to day life on the island. This gives campmates the opportunity to pick up the camera if they
want and they can go and document themselves this gives added value to the mockumentary because it makes it feel
real and less staged. Image 3 represents the scenes that are used for interviews. As you can see the boys are whittling
their wooden spears in preparation for hunting. I would use these opportunities to ask the boys questions and they can
also set the scene and explain what they are about to do. Image 4 shows the extent they go to hunt ducks but also when
they have given up and end up going to Tesco. This will also the opening credits and with a jingle over the top following
the boys around the island on the boat and then following them onto the island.

Do you like the format
(mockumentary) that
my production is
categorised in? If so
why?
Mockumentary’s are
always interesting to
watch because before
watching it is known
that it is going to be not
serious which I enjoy.
The format seems
great, it’s similar to
other mockumentarys
that follow a not to
serious plot, but in a
believable manner.
Mock-umentaries are
effective if they
successfully parody an
existing form of
documentary, whilst
appearing to be
serious. For example
This Is Spinal Tap and
Best in Show are good
examples of ludicrous
situations presented as
deadly serious.
I like mock-umentaries
depending on the topic,
if it’s something I don’t
have a view on then I
see it as funny whereas
is it’s about something
serious then I’d have to
watch it and see how I
felt about it
I don’t like mock-
umentaries purely
because they aren’t
fictional and they are
not interesting and the
majority of them are
not funny.
Do you think the
storyline of a tribe on
an island is a good
idea?
If it is set in the current
time with everything
else still going on
around, the idea of
going to Tesco I like
because nobody would
be living like this in this
day and age.
I think it’s a really well
thought out idea,
especially the idea of
taking a trip to Tesco. It
will add to the humour
and comedy of the
production.
Yes, however you will
have to pitch the ‘feel’
carefully. Is this a
nature documentary or
a survival story? Are
they meant to be
completely remote and
away from civilization?
If so the trip to Tesco
will shatter this and be
amusing.
I think the story line is a
very good idea and the
scene of going into
civilisation and seeing
how they act around
normal people I think
will be funny.
I think the story line
seems a good idea and
if filmed well it would
be funny.
If not what would you
change?

Are the activities within
the mockumentary

Ofcom on your back for
disobeying the
regulations and laws.
Do you think the use of
VFX will keep the
mockumentary seem
realistic?
Depends in what
context. If there is a
section where they are
smoking hallucinogens,
then a point of view
show and there are
blurs round the screen
and wobbles across
making the world seem
unreal.
It may not seem as
realistic, but as it’s a
mockumentary I don’t
think it will hinder the
outcome of the
production at all.
Entirely depends on
how well they are
constructed. The arrow
cam sounds like it could
work effectively, but
research carefully what
text /lines /red dots
would need to be
included in order to
look realistic. The
scenes of being
overcome by
hallucinogenic fumes
could be better
illustrated by camera
shots – ie canted
angles/movement in
camera.
I think you can make
this mock-unmentarie
without VFX by using
canted camera angles
but if you wanted to do
arrow cam then you’ll
going to have to do
some VFX during the
editing stage.
I think you shouldn’t
use any VFX to keep the
production looking like
a low budget
production but also it
makes out the fact that
little equipment could
only be taken over- ie
camera, tripod and
microphone.
If so what kind of VFX
and if not why?
Above N/A See above.
Finally, would you
watch my production?
If so why? Or if not
why?
Yes, because it seems
interesting and I
haven’t heard of
anything like it before
I would definitely
watch this; it has the
potential to be really
funny and easy
watching.
Yes I would. Yes I would watch it
and I can’t wait!
I’d give it a watch but I
can promise liking it.
So after receiving my feedback, I started to build certain ideas and certain techniques up with the criticism that I received. Peer 3 provided me
with a lot of ideas to change my production but also to make it better and more of an attraction. With the reality towards the production I
have decided that this mockumentary isn’t about the survival side nor a nature mockumentary. It is more of a channel 4 mockumentary that
they know will attract a certain audience type but it is shown for the comedy value. So I feel the adventure to Tesco skit would be funny
because they go all that way with such little money. When it comes to watershed, I have decided to display my mockumentary after 9pm. Even
though this means the majority of under 18’s won’t be watching, it allows my actors to slip up and if they happen to swear then they happen
to swear. I won’t allow this mockumentary to become 30 minutes of slang and cussing. But I feel that after 9pm will give it more comedy
value, and may also make under 18’s stay up and watch if they are allowed. When it comes to VFX I’m just going to wait until it comes to the
editing for all the effects generated electronically but I am going to use many camera angles to suggest hallucinations (that’s if I decide to use
that scene) With the SFX on the computer I will research into how it all looks at professional standards, and make sure I make the effects look
realistic but also make sure they work well.
