Why do we use a dictionary?
Look up unfamiliar words alphabetically and decide which definition is appropriate, if there is
more than one meaning
 Use the phonetic spelling to pronounce the word.
 Learn the part of speech that matches the definition.
 Understand the word and its definition by seeing it in action through a sample sentence.
 find out the origins of the word.
 understand how suffixes and prefixes changes the meaning of the root word.
 learn about words with similar meanings (synonyms) for further clarification.
 Learn about the parts of a word, parts of speech, and other information about a word
 Familiarize themselves with the Idioms and common phrases
 Look up and learn new words about technology.
Types of dictionaries
Online Dictionary
Monolingual Dictionary
A monolingual dictionary uses the same language for the words and their definitions.
Bilingual Dictionary
A bilingual dictionary gives words in
two languages. Each language is
grouped alphabetically in separate
halves of the book, with translations
into the other language.
Pocket dictionary
A pocket dictionary is a small
portable dictionary designed to be
carried around. Consequently, they
often have tough covers to withstand
the perils of travelling.
Thesaurus
A thesaurus is a book that
organizes words by categories
and concepts, so synonyms
and near-synonyms will be
grouped together.
Glossary
A glossary is a list of words or
phrases used in a particular field
with their definitions. Glossaries
are often found at the back of a
specialist or academic book as an
