Doctor who analysis
- 1. The clip starts of with an off a mid close up of the master looking over the camera, oblivious to what lies behind him. This foreshadows his later downfall as he has his guard turned off which makes it much easier for his opponents to strike him in the back. We then see Martha Jones entering from an elevator followed by two men closely behind her own two shoulders. The shot emphasizes the contrast between the Master and Martha’s character concerning the amount of issues they both have to deal with. The master has Martha and his own men weighing him down on one shoulder whereas Martha has two men weighing her down on either shoulder, symbolising how heavily put down woman are in this scene. The Master is also in focus which the director does to instruct us to focus entirely on the Master rather than what is happening around him. This symbolises how we are perceiving a large fraction of how the Master is feeling at this precise moment in time (High in power and the main focus) Furthermore the fact that Martha has two male guards monitoring her highlights the strength and power men are seen to have in contrast with woman. Additionally this shot is presented at a higher angle from the Masters viewpoint, and then escalating down to Martha who is positioned on a low platform which dramatically highlights the power difference between the two characters. The master is overall, clearly presented with the high status in the hierarchy.

This also makes us have hope in Martha that she will stand up against the Master and eventually defeat him. Martha's eyes are looking up to something the director has made us purposely oblivious to. This indicated us to turn our focus from the Master and onto Martha jones who now is in hold of the audiences hopes. This is, in a way, stereotypical to have the female character as a motherly figure to the audience however this is also contrasted with the typical stereotype of a female as Martha is seen as more of a heroic character rather than a motherly figure due to her clothing and position she is in currently. The director then does a small track allowing us to really dive into the tension and thrill being experienced by the characters in this shot.

In a sense, this highlights the start of the end of her battle with the Master. This symbolising that in each minute the clip goes through, Martha gains strength whereas the Master looses his strength and power. It is almost like he gives his power to Martha without realising which highlights his obliviousness to Martha Jones in the first scene. Furthermore the fact that the woman is on the higher platform foreshadows the ending of the clip.

However half of the masters face is hidden from us in this close up which highlights that maybe the other side of the masters face is complete darkness which highlights how he is trying to hide his weakness from us and especially his enemy.Martha Jones, because if she is able to witnesses this lack of power, it will give her strength to defeat him.

Furthermore the camera is also showing her dark features and trying to hide the light on the opposite side of her face which highlights how she is purposely trying to hide the little strength she has.
