Ebola virus disease (EVD), also known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a serious and often fatal disease caused by the Ebola virus. The virus was first identified in 1976 near the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The 2014 outbreak in West Africa was the largest in history, affecting Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, and resulting in over 8,000 cases and 4,000 deaths. The virus is transmitted through contact with infected body fluids like blood, vomit or feces and the most common means of transmission is through direct contact with infected patients.
