For your final paper the essay topic question will be your
choice! However it has to
be something related to the hospitality industry in some way.
There is a sample list of possible topic questions from previous
students which you
may use if you wish but it is better if you can create your own
topic question.
Note: A topic question must be a question that could be
answered either
Yes or No. This enables you to write a balanced argumentative
paper.
Your lecturer MUST approve your topic question before you
start
researching or writing your paper!
What you need to do.
1. Decide what you essay topic question is going to be. When
you have decided
this, email to your teacher for approval. Then write a research
based essay on
that topic using all of the skills you have learned so far
regarding structure,
citation, critical analysis and layout.
2. WORD count = minimum 1000 – maximum 1500.
3. All of the work submitted must be your own. Plagiarism or
copying will be
dealt with as a very serious issue. Submission will be by
‘Turnitin’, a
computer system that looks for plagiarism. If your paper has a
score of
30% or more it will receive a zero grade.
4. Structure the paper with:

Annotated Bibliography/Paper Proposal
2/27
In this first major assignment, you will continue the research
that will define your semester in 102. This initial project will
consist of two parts: an eight-source Annotated Bibliography
and a paper proposal that demonstrates the conversation you are
joining.
Annotated Bibliography (10%)
These sources can include those from your completed and
upcoming ILPs.
Your eight-item Annotated Bibliography must include:
· At least two scholarly, peer-reviewed articles;
· At least two contemporary/credible newspapers/websites;
· At least one cartoon or image relating to your topic (a graph,
satirical cartoon, etc.);
· At least one video or audio source (a Ted Talk, YouTube
video, Podcast, film, etc.).
For each source:
· Write a properly formatted MLA citation;
· Summarize the central claim and major evidence;
· Assess the reliability of the source;
· Explain how you will use it in your paper (if you cannot do
this, find a new source);
· 150 words per source +/- 10%
Project Proposal (5%)
Your proposal consists of two parts: demonstrating the
conversation that you wish to join, as shown by your current
sources, and then explicitly explaining what you wish to argue.
Your final argument can be about almost anything, as long as
there is a connection to current events, be they political or
social.
Part One: in ~700 words, demonstrate how the sources of your
annotated bibliography synthesize to form a singular
conversation. You do not need to directly quote from your
sources, although this may help. Note: do not just re-list your
sources like you did in your An. Bib., but explicitly demonstrate
how they work together.
Part Two: in ~300 words, explain what you want to argue. You
must include a rough thesis (understanding you will adapt this
as you continue), explain why you want to follow this particular
argument, and consider what issues you may face trying to make
this specific argument. The stronger a proposal, the easier it is
to start a paper, so good luck.

· Feb. 13: Library Session, Thomas Cooper
· Feb. 20-25: peer review
· Feb. 27: due, 1:15
