- 1. Engl 208: Personal and Exploratory Writing UIdaho Fall ’19; Malone Assignment 5: Final Project Your Task: We’re almost done! To conclude your experience in Personal Writing this semester, your final task is a reflective project in two parts: A substantial revision of one of your essays and a formal letter. Part I: The Revision Choose one of your essays from this semester to revise. Remember, revision does not mean taking something “bad” and making it “good.” While you are of course welcome to revise a piece you did not do as well on as you would have hoped, I actually recommend you choose a piece you enjoy; one that you perhaps had wanted to do more with before the original deadline. Format: You may revise by hand or digitally. However, you must turn in two copies. 1. A copy with your changes on it (cross-outs, additions, etc.) and marginal comments which justify the major revisions you have made. (ie. why did you want to change the parts you did?). I recommend using track changes and the comments feature in Word or scanning your hand- written marginalia. 2. A clean, revised copy. Part II: The Letter Compose a formal business letter – one paged, single spaced, size 11 or 12 standard serif font. Your letter should answer two questions: First, what were your goals for the piece you chose to revise and how do you feel you have accomplished that goal? Cite specific parts of your essay to prove your claim. Second, How has your relationship to personal writing changed throughout our course? Please cite specific assignments, readings, or discussions from our semester which felt especially formative. Format: Your letter should follow business letter format according to the examples provided. Your letter should include: • An introduction which contextualizes your letter and previews your answers to the two main questions • Body paragraph(s) answering question 1. • Body paragraph(s) answering question 2. • A conclusion which clearly states what you think the role of writing might be for you beyond our class. Due Dates and Grades: Please submit both these assignments to the “Final Project” dropbox on BB Learn by 11:59 PM on Thursday, December 19. Both parts of this assignment are worth 75 points each. Your grade on the revision will not impact your grade on the original assignment in any way. In fact, you will be evaluated primarily on your attention to both global and local errors and your ability to justify why and how you made deliberate changes. A smaller portion of your grade will consider the essay through the original requirements of the prompt. Your letter will be graded for your ability to substantially answer (with evidence) the two main questions. You will also be graded for format, organization, and tone.

Engl 208: Personal and Exploratory Writing UIdaho Fall ’19; Malone Assignment 5: Final Project Outcomes: This essay aims to meet all learning outcomes for the course with additional emphasis on students’ ability to: • Demonstrate metacognitive awareness of their writing process. • Demonstrate ability to revise globally and locally. Rubric: I will grade your letter according to this scale, copied from the syllabus: I will award all your assignments a letter grade in increments of 2.5 points. An “A” project, for example, might receive a 100, 97.5, 95, 92.5, or a 90. To earn at least a 90, your assignment must be complete (on time, with all prompt components, meeting length requirements) and show strong evidence of the particular skills emphasized by the prompt and in class. To earn at least an 80, you should turn in a relevant assignment on time. However, if you are missing components of the prompt or if you do not meet the length requirements, you may be ineligible to earn above an 89. To earn at least a 70, you must do more than one of the following: • Submit work late • Fail to meet page count • Fail to include a significant component of the prompt • Demonstrate minimal effort to practice the targeted skills for the assignment • Appear to have misinterpreted the prompt You will earn below a 70 if you turn in an irrelevant assignment with multiple missing components. Late work policy: You will lose half a letter grade for each day your assignment is late. After seven days, you will receive an automatic “0” on the assignment.
