Advanced Portfolio in Media
Evaluation Intro & Question 1
Overview of Evaluation
• Question 1 - In what ways do your media products use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
• Question 2 - How effective is the combination of your main task (trailer) and ancillary
tasks (poster & magazine cover)?
• Question 3 - What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
• Question 4 - How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research,
planning and evaluation stages?
• Further details on how to answer these questions will appear in separate posts.
• Remember: the evaluation is worth 20% of the unit. That's the same as your research
and planning combined. It's also twice as much as your poster, or your magazine cover.
It's also half the value of your video. And finally, 20 marks represents 2 grades.
• Remember too that this is an Advanced Level unit: your answer should be more
advanced and more detailed, with greater understanding than your AS Evaluation.
• Do not neglect your evaluations. Do not give superficial or brief answers. Do not skip any
question.
• Give each question the time it deserves. Make a positive difference to your grade.
Assessment Criteria
• Assessment Criteria for the Evaluations - what you are marked on
• understanding of the forms and conventions used in the productions (Question1)
• understanding of the combination of main product and ancillary texts (Question
2)
• understanding of the significance of audience feedback (Question 3)
• understanding of the role and use of new media in various stages of the
production (Question 4)
And in all questions:
• skill in the use of digital technology or ICT in the evaluation.
• skill in choice of form in which to present the evaluation.
• ability to communicate.
Question 1
• Question 1:In what ways do your media products use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
• In order to answer this question you must be creative and also provide critical
and technical depth.
• You should compare specific shots of your trailer to that of professional texts and
discuss how you've used the genre's repertoire, themes and specific aspects of
the cinematography, editing, mise-en-scene and sound.
• You should do the same for your ancillary tasks - again cropping out sections of
your work for detailed comparison.
• Remember you should be using appropriate media terminology!
How should I present my work?
• Ideally this should be a directors commentary with your work featuring on screen
whilst a voice over discusses it. Moreover, you should appear yourself with the
work in the top right hand corner of the screen. You should include images of
your work and professional work as you discuss it in critical depth.
