COMPARISON TO OTHER MEDIA
• The film ‘ American Sniper’ •

Based on the name of the piece there are similarities from the titles. ‘American sniper’ shows obviously
that the piece is centred around a sniper. Our piece can be compared to this as ‘Field of Fire’ has
sniper meanings and from an audience point of view is about guns from the word ‘fire’.
In the extract we see the main action through the scope of the sniper, very similar with our own piece.
We also have a continual switch between the sniper and the action as in our own piece.
In the real media product the editing it quick and clean, showing the sniper shot going off and the
women dying with a perfect flow.
COMPARISON TO OTHER MEDIA
• Quantum of Solace (James Bond) •

A vast majority of all Bond Films start with and action packed first scene and we wanted to replicate this
in our own piece. The idea of a tracking shot to set the scene at the beginning in a beautiful landscape
was an idea we wanted to repeat in our own piece. The aim was to involve the audience from the word
go and as our questionnaire found the beginning to a movie is the most important and important (70%)
we had to make an impact. We completed this by as shown on the clip starting peacefully and calmly
then flipping the scenes theme to very chaotic
WHAT CONVENTIONS WE CHALLENGED AND WHY?
The major thriller convention we tried to challenge was the gender of the antagonist character, the
sniper. The antagonists in thrillers are typically considered as male characters but we wanted to change
this. A lot of action thrillers really struggle when they come to attracting a female audience. We felt by
having a strong and powerful female character it would make people intrigued and also attract a
different audience.
WHY WE KEPT THE CONVENTIONS?
Thriller conventions are very obvious to the genre and are commonly used to highlight the type of movie
the audience is watching. As we have shown it is good to challenge thriller conventions but only a little.
We gave the audience a feel of what the movie will be like while keeping them guessing about what will
happen next and the importance of the meeting. A very stereotypical convention we kept was the music.
It changes with the action and keeps up the tempo while any characters are in danger.
