IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

Cover Page
Main Image – As well as
using a main image as a
conventional aspect, I have
used a singular long shot
which has taken up the
majority of the page with
the cover lines surrounding
it at either side. This shows a
deliberate focal point and
links to the main headline as
the main part of the
magazine. This is a typical
element used within
magazines in order to focus
the readers attention to a
specific area of the
magazine.
Masthead – My magazine uses a masthead to establish the brand of the media product.
This is a common convention used within most magazines and it helps the audience to
realise what they are reading. My masthead is placed across the top of the page in a
large and noticeable font so that it is bold and stands out on the page. I have
challenged the masthead form by using a different colour for one of the letters. I did this
because I thought that this made my magazine seem more interesting and related to
the initial idea of my magazine being different against others and not following the
trend, announced in my pitch. In my magazine research, I found that white was a colour
that would be noticeable and recommended for my magazine, and incorporating it into
the font, making it easier to incorporate.
Barcode – A barcode has been placed on
the cover page in a typical position that
other magazines use. This is used as a
typical convention used on magazines to
purchase the media product, therefore
making my magazine seem more realistic
and professional.
Cover Lines – Cover lines are one of the main
attractions on a magazine to show what contents
the magazine has and making it appeal to the
correct target audience. My magazine used 5 cover
lines as well as the main headline to show variation
of content within my magazine. According to my
research, my audience wanted to read about
upcoming artists, current artist interview and
upcoming events and reviews. I have included these
aspects on my cover page so this would attract the
audience and establishes my magazine better.
Footer - Although
this is not always
on magazine
fronts, I think this
could be classed as
a common
magazine
convention. I
slightly varied it
through different
colourations of the
font. I included this
to incorporated
more information
to the cover page
so the audience
can see more
content which is
something other
magazines use this
for.
I also incorporated a selling/tag line to add to my magazine. This
can be seen on magazines such as Q and mixmag in order to grab
the attention of its consumers.

Image – I have used live shot image on my page along with a
caption to show what this is and where it can be found in the
magazine. I used this as a way where I could introduce a
performance review as well as a good addition to the contents
page. Rather than using multiple images, I stuck to the minimal
style and the alternative rock style of it staying within the trend,
and this could be seen to challenge typical magazine forms.
Column – I have listed the contents included within my magazine to show
the audience what is in the magazine and what the main areas are. Because
my magazine focuses on a minimal aspect, one shorter column with smaller
font on the left hand side of the page is very different compared to a busy
contents page that is used within most magazines. My magazines focuses
on differentiation and this is one of the main features within my magazine
which could be seen as challenging typical conventions.
Page numbers –
These are used
within my
magazine to
direct the
audience to their
pages of interest.
For this I have not
listed every page
number which is
shown within
magazines - this
shows the more
important
content.
This would follow
the magazine
convention and
shares this
similarity with
other magazine
pages.
Graphic Design – My contents page in
particular includes graphic design on the right
hand side of the page within my house style. I
think that this added a unique look to my
magazine and it is not always placed in contents
pages. I took my inspiration from researching
and analysing NME’s double page spread, and I
think the style fits my magazine well. I think I
challenged the typical magazine convention as
this is not always involved, and the style is very
different from other magazines that I researched
in my research.
There is a faint showing of ‘Offbeat’ placed
in the background which fades into it. I’ve
done this to develop add a different
placement style of the masthead on the
page compared to typical designs.

Double Page Spread
Headline - The main headline is the name of the person in the article. This is a common convention within
magazines with articles about the artists or an interview, within this page, this has both.
There is an obvious display of which headline is the most important. The ‘Brand new album release’ and the
name of the artists link together in the form of capital letters, but the sizing of the font and colouration of the
font is very different, and acts as a hierarchy almost. I think because ese headline don’t lead into one line, it
looks interesting on the page and is different compared to a typical magazine design.
Photos - Like most
magazines, I have
incorporated a large
image on one side of
the page followed by
an article on the right.
This is a typical
convention in most
music magazines. I
have also
incorporated another
image into the article
because the style of
photography is
different compared to
normal magazines, so
I have placed a close
up of her face to show
who it is and make it
clearer to the
audience.
Columns - I
have followed
the convention
of columns in my
magazine and
used three
columns so that
it looks equal
and balanced on
the page
between the
pictures. I have
used a white
font on a black
background and
also to neutralise
the article. This
way the pink and
yellow stand out
as key features.
Layout - My magazine follows the
typical layout of magazine articles. I
like the simplistic look of this page
and I think incorporating new
different images, different fonts,
graphic designs and bold letters
follows and develops traditional
layouts.
The graphic design looks interesting and frames the article. The shape drawn represents pitch and tempo, and I think this adds
excitement and a feel of music to the page. This could be seen as a development of the media form because it’s not always used in
magazines. It adds differentiation and intrigues the readers more.
