Eye Shadow
Eye shadow is available in powder, liquid, gel
and cream formulations. It is produced in a matt
or pearlised finish. Pearlised colours can be
used effectively for highlighting, particularly in
an evening make-up, however should be
avoided on crepey skin and wrinkles. Cream
shadows contain wax and oil and can create
creases when applied and so tend not to be as
popular. Gel products produce a translucent
wash of colour which is popular with young
clients or clients wanting to create a more
natural result.
Eyeliner
This is used to emphasise the eye area, frame
the eye and accentuate the lash line. Eyeliner
comes in a variety of colours however the most
popular are darker colours that blend in with
the mascara. The most popular products are
eyeliner pencil and liquid eyeliner.
There are different techniques that can be used
to apply eyeliner and these are explained on
the next slides.
Effects of different colours
When applying the eye shadow
different effects will be
achieved depending on the
colour used.
 Dark muted tones—such as
black, charcoal, olive, plum
and brown are used for defining
and contouring the eyes. Use a
fine eye lining brush to apply.
 Soft muted shades — like grey
and beige are used to produce
a more subtle look.
Effects of different colours
 Bright colours—like blue, green, orange, violet are
used to draw attention to the eye and are more
commonly used on younger clients or for fashion
work.
 Pastel colours— aqua, mint, pale pink, pale blue and
peach emphasise the colour of the eyes and
complement clients with blonde or grey hair.
 Pale colours—such as white, silver, cream have
highlighting effects and are used to create a
contrast between other colours.

Mascara
Mascara is used to darken, thicken and add length to the
eyelashes. It is available in various colours such as, brown,
black, blue, dark green, violet, navy and grey. For a client with
grey or fair hair a grey or brown colour would be best. If the
client has red or auburn hair then a brown or brown/black
mascara would be best. If the client has dark hair advise a
black mascara. Finally, it is important that you match the colour
of the mascara to the eye makeup.
Mascara comes in two different formulations:
 Cake is the original type of mascara and needs a small drop of
water adding to make the application effective.
 Liquid comes in tubular containers with a brush inside. Quite
often people pump the mascara brush to get more product
onto the brush, however this creates air inside the container
causing it to dry out. It is best to swirl the brush around instead.
Eyebrow Colour
The eyebrows can be defined by applying
eyebrow colour/pencil. If applied correctly it
can alter the brow shape and match uneven
brows. Colour can be applied by using either
powder or brow pencil (brow pencil is harder
is consistency than eyeliner to prevent too
much product being applied and looking
unnatural). Eyebrow pencil is usually
available in grey, brown and black.
Alternatively you can use eye shadow, simply
select a colour that is closest to the natural
colour of the eyebrows.
