What Does E.M.S. Do to the
Body?
The faradic unit
The faradic unit is named after Michael Faraday, who studied the
nature of electricity, but it is in fact an electrical muscular
stimulation (EMS) unit, often referred to as neuro-muscular electrical
stimulation
E.M.S
Modern beauty therapy equipment combines various types of medium-
to low-frequency currents. The type of current used is an
alternating,low- frequency, surged and interrupted current. The
source of electricity can be either the mains or a battery.
Application
The aim of facial faradic treatment is to intensively exercise the
individual muscles, or groups of muscles, which produces a firmer look
to the contours of the face. Most modern faradic machines have face
and body outlets on them.
The Machine
On/off switch; some machines also
have a timer.
Reset button; this
prevents the machine
from working unless all
the pad outlet, dials are
turned to zero.
The “panic button”,
this is a switch on a lead
which is plugged in to
the back of the machine
and is given to the
client.
The main set of dials; over the pad
outlets control the muscle contraction.
Pulse Sequence
This is the wave form,or phase control and has four types.
1. Bi-phasic regular pulse width; the electrical impulse passes in both directions
between pads, giving a firm toning treatment to strengthen treatment of the
Muscles. In normal body treatment the pads should be bi-phasic for comfort
And give an effective treatment. The lights above the dial will indicate that
the current is alternating between pads.
2. Mono-phasic regular pulse. The electrical impulse pass in only one direction,
Helping to lift the muscle being treated.
The black negative pad should always be placed on the insertion of the muscleThe black negative pad should always be placed on the insertion of the muscle
and the red on theand the red on the origin of the muscle (positive) (BIRO Black Insertion Redorigin of the muscle (positive) (BIRO Black Insertion Red
Origin).Origin).
Therefore the black pad is below the red.
This enables the muscle fibre to be lifted towards the origin. This is recommended
for the face and neck muscles.
When Mono phasic pulse is in operation only the positive light (the red light) will
Show.
Irregular pulseIrregular pulse
Bi -phasic This adds variety to the treatment and
should be applied to the body when the client begins
to anticipate the current.
Mono -phasic. This adds variety to the treatment to
avoid the client anticipating the current and to avoid
the muscles becoming uncomfortable.
Frequency and Pulse Setting
Frequency
Normal body 80-100Hz
Facial 120Hz
Deep muscle 60 Hz
Pulse width
Normal body 160µs
Facial 90µs
Deep muscle 240µs
When doing facial work it is vital to warm the face to
prevent muscle damage.
To improve the treatment it is also important to give a
Few minutes lymphatic to prevent the build up of
lactic acids.

Ensure surge speed is

E.M.S. Procedure for the Face
 Remove jewellery and make-up
 Test machine on self
 Adjust pulse sequence, frequency and pulse width.
 Check intensity dials are off.
 Switch on timer and press restart button.
 Dampen electrodes and place on the muscle.
 Turn up intensity control and contract muscle ten times.
 Turn down the intensity control and move to the next muscle and
repeat the above.
 Continue until all required facial muscles have been treated.
