1. Analyze Learners
This lesson is prepared for a Special Ed. 1st grade class. There are ten boys and seven girls
in the class. Most of the students are white with a few African-Americans and Latinos. About
half of the class has mild to severe ADHD, so they have difficulties staying focused in class.
Learning styles vary for each student, some may be auditory, visual, or kinetic learners. This
lesson needs to have different methods of teaching so that everybody has an equal opportunity
to learn the material. This lesson must be created to make learning the months of the year fun
and to keep the students focused on the task ahead. Students should know some months of the
year, but they may not know the order of them.
2. State Objectives
The first grade students will recite all 12 months of the year in order. The students will
observe calendars that have pictures related to each month, listen to a song that has a fun tune
saying the months of the year, create their own calendars, and finally, each student will be
assigned a month and they need to line up according to their month. After studying and
learning for a whole week, 80% of the students will recite all of the months in order.
3. Select Methods, Media, and Materials
The media that will be used in this lesson is a computer and speakers which will play the
song saying the months of the year. All the students will have a calendar showing the 12
months, all with different pictures relating to each month. Another method of learning is
assigning each student a month of the year, some months will have two students, and have them
line up in order of the month that they have.
4. Utilize Media and Materials
The teacher will preview the material by playing the song and making sure it works
properly and the students will be able to hear it. Also, the teacher needs to view the calendars
that will be given to each student, making sure that the students will be able to read them and
that they are colorful so it catches the students attention. Each month will have a picture related
to that month, for example, January will have a snowflake, February will have a heart, March
will have a clover, and so on. The teacher will prepare the material by having the song ready to
play and printing off all of the colorful calendars. The seating in the class is arranged so that
everybody can hear the song that is being played. The teacher will prepare the learners by
telling them the agenda for the week and that they will be evaluated at the end of the week by
having to recite the months in order. The teacher will provide the learning experience by first,
handing out the colorful calendars. Then, the teacher will play the song. After a few times
playing the song, the students will be asked to sing along. Next, the teacher will go over the
calendar saying the month and the picture related to each month. Also, students will be allowed
to create their own calendars and draw anything they want that will help them remember that
month. Finally, each student will be given a month, and by working as a class, they will need to
line up in order. At first, they will need to look at their calendars, but by the end of the week,
they should be able to work together and line up in order with no calendars.
5. Require Learner Participation
Each student should participate in singing the song once they learn the tune. Students need
to listen while their teacher uses the calendar to describe the months of the year with the picture
related with it. Each student will be required to make their own calendars. Each student in the
class will be given a month, some months will have two students, and they should work
together to line up in the correct order.
6. Evaluate and Revise
At the end of the week, the students will be able to line up in the correct order of their given
months. Also, each student will get in front of the class and recite the months of the year. The
students that recite the months of the year in the correct order will be given a perfect grade and
a prize. If many of the students could not remember the months of the year, I would revise the
lesson by adding a creative presentation and encourage more class participation.
