Centre Name and Number:
York College 48357
Student Name and Number:
Josh Eastham (348112)
Project proposal title and date:
Working Title: C.A.L.L.I
Date: January – June 2019
Main area of activity:
I will be working in the video medium producing my project as a short film.
Rationale:
My main reason for me wanting to make this project is because I read things in the news about
advances in artificial intelligence technology that genuinely scares me. This subject can often
seem laughable and that it is ridiculous to think that the technology will get to the point like it is in
the movies where it endangers humanity. However, these films aren’t made just to entertain us.
They are made to warn us about a very real threat! The more I research it the more it scares me.
Whilst I think in some areas it is a good thing, I think we really do have to be careful as a species
so that it doesn’t get out of hand.
In terms of my previous projects I think my year one FMP matches up closely with this project. The
reason I say this is because that is the last time that I produced a short film and as a result will
include similar techniques, styles and ways of working to this project. I will be looking at camera
techniques that I have already learned such as pan/zoom shots, slider shots and pull focus shots.
In my last project I also learned some more advanced editing techniques in Premier such as warp
stabilisation and how to blur faces and track pixels. Hopefully I will be able to apply these
techniques to my project if necessary. I also successfully experimented with a native cinematic
2:39:1 aspect ratio, something I considered in my year one FMP but decided it was too
complicated. I could have done my entire project in this aspect ratio however it didn’t fit with the
purpose style and tone of my video. It also didn’t work with the warp stabilisation effect that I
needed to apply to stabilise some shots. However, I think it will work with this project, as the
cinematography is something that I am focusing a lot on in this project. I will also hopefully be
trying some new techniques such as filming using a camera gimbal; I want to do this so that I can
have smooth shots throughout my film that will add certain sleekness to it as well as making sure
that I don’t have to use a warp stabilizer.
Project Concept:
My project is going to be a short film about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence. The way it is going
to convey this message is through telling a fictional story with a strong morale in it. This allows me
to be creative with the project as it will all be my own concepts that will allow me to still create a
strong meaning.
The name of my project is C.A.L.L.I. This is an acronym for Computerised Algorithm for Life
Logistics Interface which is the name of a brain implant that the main character Fin has purchased.
Once the software activates Fin is amazed by the technology and how much it has helped in his
daily life tasks. However, things start to go wrong when Fin is attacked as the software is unable to
understand how to correctly handle the situation. Leading it to force Fin to do something terrible
against his own will.

How will the project be evaluated and reviewed?
I plan on evaluating my work by doing weekly reflections and taking screenshots of my work as I
go along. I will then be using them in my final evaluation document to annotate and demonstrate
my progress in this project. This will allow me to show the examiner how I have worked, why I
have made certain decisions and what I think I could do to improve. As high quality as this project
needs to be, I still anticipate technical faults; this is something that I must acknowledge in my
evaluation as it will show that I am aware of any faults that have arisen as well as what I could do
to improve. This constant evaluation will allow me to use this work as almost like a template for
future projects providing it is successful. By this I mean that when I am doing a future project in
university, I can look back at this one and its successes and downfalls and then work to the same
level and use the feedback from my evaluation to improve and achieve a higher grade. This is
something I have done all throughout my college course which allows a constant stream of
progression. I have found that this is specifically for me the best way of progressive working and
learning for me.
