Future of Computing
Computer engineers are influenced by needs and fantasies about the future when predicting computing trends. Some trends witnessed so far include advances in communication bandwidth through technologies like DWDM that allow fiber networks to carry 20,000 times more data. Storage is also becoming vastly cheaper, with predictions of a petabyte explosion and personal data storage needs reaching 100GB per user by 2009. Most information produced in the coming years will be digital content shared individually. Computing devices will continue getting smaller and more integrated into daily life through technologies like smart appliances and multi-touch interfaces. The goal is ubiquitous computing available to anyone, anywhere, anytime, using anything through collaborative networks.
