Genocide
GENOCIDE IN GERMANY(Holocaust) 1938-1945The genocide of approximately six million European Jews during World War II, a programme of systematic state-sponsored extermination by Nazi Germany throughout Nazi-occupied territory. In addition to Jews, the Nazis targeted Gypsies, Soviet prisoners of war, Polish and Soviet civilians, disabled people and other political and religious opponents. The Holocaust began in 1933 when Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany and ended in 1945 when the Nazis were defeated by the Allied powers.
Genocide
Reasons for genocideHitler needed a scapegoat to blame problems in Europe on.He blamed the Jews for Germany's defeat in World War I and subsequent economic hardships.
Hitler also asserted that Germans with fair skin, blond hair and blue eye were the supreme form of human. The Jews, according to Hitler, were the racial opposite.Hitler’s perceived “master race”.
Concentration CampA place where prisoners were mistreated, subjected to medical experiments, died from disease, starvation, overwork, or were executed as unfit for working.
Extermination Camp A camp which functions mainly to kill as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. Within 24 hour of arrival, prisoners would have been killed. Equipped with gas chambers for the purpose of systematic mass extermination of peoples was a unique feature of the Holocaust and unprecedented in history. Never before in history had there existed places with the express purpose of killing people en masse.
Methods of Killing/Torture:Gas chamber.Babies were thrown in the air and shot into ditches for games for the soldiers.Putting people’s hands in boiling water until the skin and fingernails came off like gloves.Sewing different body parts onto other people.
Facts about the German genocide:It is estimated that 11 million people perished during theHolocaust. The Nazis killed approximately two-thirds of all Jews living in Europe. Over 6000000 Jewish people were executed. An estimated 1.1 million children were murdered. There were 15,000 prison camps scattered throughout the territory occupied by Hitler, the most awful being Aushwitz.
ConclusionThe calamities of the Holocaust willforever leave their imprint on the human race. The multitude of lives lost in the period between 1939 and 1945 are a sobering reminder to the generations: be ever vigilant in the fight againsthatred, tyranny and oppression. If we can learn from the mistakesof the past and pledge never to see them repeated, then the eleven milliondid not die in vain!Lest we forget!
